11.04 and 11.10b1 "select and install software" fails

I've tried to install 11.04 and 11.10b1 (both alternate) and both are showing "installation step failed" on "select and install software". I need to use alternate to use software raid.

Hardware (brand new)
Intel "sandy bridge" Core2duo 2500K
Gigabyte Z68MA-D2H-B3
Software raid set up with 2x2TB HDDs
8gb ram
Using the integrated graphics that come with sandy bridge processors+z68 chipset

I get the same on 11.04 Alternate ISO in qemu. Switching to the stdout tty4 it shows a message about menu actions failing with error code 1.

Digging through I eventually found this was due to my virtual disk not being large enough and ran out of space.
