This team will be called the:
NU Ubuntu Team
( Northeastern United States Ubuntu Team )
Looking for Ubuntu/Kubuntu/Edubuntu/Xubuntu users(and any related derivatives) of this region of the USA.
The Northeastern United States is a region of the United States (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States) defined by the U.S. Census Bureau (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/U.S._Census_Bureau). The Northeast is bordered to the north by Canada (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canada), to the west by the Midwest (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Midwest), to the south by the South (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/U.S._Southern_States), and to the east by the Atlantic Ocean (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atlantic_Ocean).
As defined by the Census Bureau, the Northeast region of the United States covers nine states: Connecticut (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Connecticut), Maine (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maine), Massachusetts (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Massachusetts), New Jersey (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Jersey), New Hampshire (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Hampshire), New York (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_York), Pennsylvania (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pennsylvania), Rhode Island (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rhode_Island), and Vermont (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vermont). Some unofficial classifications of the region add Maryland (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maryland), Delaware (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Delaware), District of Columbia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/District_of_Columbia), Virginia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Virginia), and West Virginia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/West_Virginia). We will include all 13 states listed above and the District of Columbia in our local team
It is important that this local team be aligned with the US Census Bureau definition of the Northeastern United States & include Maryland, Delaware, & the District of Columbia so we can easily do demographic research of Ubuntu/Kubuntu/Edubuntu/Xubuntu users easily and give us a more viable cohesive voice and community spirit.
The networking of this region is important to help in overall marketing and support in this region of the USA. while the land area is overall small compared to the rest of the USA our overall impact in our region and networking of our great cities and states will help Ubuntu tremendously.
*This regional team is modeled after the
Pacific Northwest Loco Team
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/PNWTeam
we will strive to instill Ubuntu community unity in the Northeastern region of the United States like the Pacific Northwest region is striving for.
below are maps of the Northeastern United States Region(in solid red and red striped; except Virgina & West Virginia):

Great to have you on as the first team member, the greatest way you can help at this moment is to help us gain new members.
We can pool our resources together and create a dynamic network.
some goals that I have immediatelly is to create a membership of atleast 10 members then we will begin to build our Wiki, IRC channel for online meetings
for now we can utilize GAIM.
Once we have a qourum we will hold our first meeting an create plans that we can realize immediately.
With the release of Dapper Drake and CD's to be shipped soon we will build on the overall successful momemtum of Ubuntu.
This is very exicitng!

Thank you very much Rikostan.
My primary goal is to unite, motivate and actualize.
I would like to focus on goals I have set in my prior post I'll start with a short term goal then expand on a long term goal later.:
goal #2. Supply Ubuntu (CDs & CD images) to the general public
This is something that each member of the "NU Ubuntu Team" can set for themselves now. As a commitment to acheive this goal set a realistic distribution goal for yourself and how you plan to acheive this.
I'll start with my goal:
*I plan to distribute 100 Ubuntu Dapper Drake CD's 60 PC, 20 64bit, 20 Mac.(I will order this amount once regular distribution resumes)
*I will distribute several ways:
1. through my work
2. through my social network
3. through family
4. through the student unions at my wifes university
*I will refer all people I distribute to, to go directly to the Ubuntu Forum if they need help.
My challenge to all "NU Ubuntu Team" members(as well as all Ubuntu users) is to set a distribution goal for yourself and post your goal and your progress here.

I've spoken to Yozef via PM, and I've decided I want to join up as well. I live outside Boston, Massachusetts (in Arlington, for those of your familiar with the area) and I'm really looking forward to participating in this group!
In terms of goals, I'm going to try to distribute 50 Ubuntu CDs: (once we can order them from shipit) 34 PC, and 8 each of the Mac and 64 bit flavors.

The area I live in is very, very rural in nature, so my distribution goals will be pretty low. 25 Regular CDs, 5 PPC CDs, and 1 64 bit CD.
I have already given out 5 of the regular and 5 of the PPC CDs to co-workers and friends.
On a related note, I work for a label making company.
Last week I got a quote on stickers and magnets. I am going to get some prototypes done and if they are suitable, I'll send a stack of each to all of the team leaders.

As an effective team we need to have effective means of communication between our team members:
1. here in the Ubuntu Forum (I think we should also add each other to our buddy list)
2. which is the best means of conducting our online meetings? IRC, GAIM, on the Chat of our NU Ubuntu Team member map? please let me know which you think is best?
Also I would like to develope a unique team logo, like the Australian local team has done, please submit your ideas here.
I also need help in setting up our Launchpad and wiki, if anybody can help me with the development of this please PM me. I have started the Launchpad site but it is very rough.

FredSambo thanks for the clarification, that is what I thought, just wanted to be sure.
So you are in charge of some of the most beautiful part of the country: Northern New England.
Ok I hope everybody here has plotted themselves on the NU Ubnutu Team Member Map.
Actually only half of us have put ourselves on the map, I know these are busy times with the new release.
I look forward to seeing us all plotted.
http://www.frappr.com/nuubuntuteammembermap
Fredsambo the CD duplication will come in handy for my next idea; we should all utilize the shipit idea to obtain CD's but it will be nice to know we have one member who has a CD duplication machine and another member who works for a label making company & all our members who can distribute, some have posted distribution goals.
I am going to start a new frapper map for all Ubuntu members who distribute to post places of business where Ubuntu will be distributed from. I have a CD distribution set where I work in Washington DC, I work as an optician and the front of the store we have a place for people to wait for the Doctor on the table I have Ubuntu CD's. It is nice because I can casually talk with customers about computers and they are overjoyed to walk out with free Ubuntu CD's.
So for all members a challenge start thinking about where Ubuntu can be distributed: I am also going to talk with some owners of local coffe shops. This may be a great place for all members to think about, some place you go in regularly and can make sure they have plenty of copies.
EDIT: frapper maps for ditribution isn't exactely what I was thinking of on a global scale but for our group we can plot business locations where we will distribute Ubuntu.

As to communication, I think a wiki page/launchpad page would be best to post long-term goals, meeting dates, etc. For informal person-to-person communications, Gaim would probably be the best (at least for me.)
I'm TotaLackOfSanity on AIM, and spitty AT gmail DOT com on MSN.
As to artwork... my artwork has been compared to that of an epelliptic 3 year old in the middle of a seizure, so I'm afriad I can't help in that department.
I think that's everything...?

OK take a look at the NU Ubuntu Team Member Map, I have posted a distribution site for free Ubuntu CD's in Washington DC.
You can do the same in your area, either place of business(your work or local coffee shop), library, School or University, etc.
Please think about where you can distribute Ubuntu CD's and set the place on the map.
cheers, Jozef

Fredsambo the CD duplication will come in handy for my next idea; we should all utilize the shipit idea to obtain CD's but it will be nice to know we have one member who has a CD duplication machine and another member who works for a label making company & all our members who can distribute, some have posted distribution goals.
i have a duplicator but i do not have the ability to print/paint on the disks, so maybe stickers would work?

yes, I think we need to consult Rikostan on this...
On a related note, I work for a label making company.
Last week I got a quote on stickers and magnets. I am going to get some prototypes done and if they are suitable, I'll send a stack of each to all of the team leaders.

I promised a post of a long term goal, which I will now call the primary directive of the NU Ubuntu Team...I debuted this idea in another thread I started on "Worldwide Ubuntu distribution Map"
http://www.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=186372
My goal is to take this all a step further and set up a NU Ubuntu Foundation....take it beyond just a hardware store to a Foundation.
Where we have a store front to collect old PC's and Laptops to recycle old Apple and MS systems into Ubuntu Systems and then donate these to Teachers, Students, Senior Citizens or anybody in need....these would be donated to eligible people with full support.
...but we would also sale high-end systems with Ubuntu to raise funds for the Foundation.
This is my primary goal in being the Team Leader of the NU Ubuntu Team.
"10. Start a "NU Ubuntu Foundation" within the USA to collect donations of old Computers, and install Edubuntu/Ubuntu/Kubuntu/Xubuntu for Teachers and Students within the Nu Ubuntu Team region. We will specialize in recycling old MS & apple computers for Teachers, students, elderly and those in need."
http://www.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=184438
Not-for-profit does NOT mean Non-profit
I was waiting to debut this idea but no better time then the present, this is an endeavor that I have been woking on for a while now.
please contact me directly or post here if anybody wants to help.
this will be a primary focus of the NU Ubuntu Team.
I have been working on this idea for a while and have befriended a Ubuntu user in Montana who working on a similar project but on a much smaller scale.
but my focus, my idea is on a grand scale.....think of the polish of an Apple store with tech support, selling hardware to raise funds not to profit the people like Jobs or Gates but to raise funds for the NU Ubuntu Foundation.....where are primary endeavor is to recycle old apple and microsoft systems to donate to the needy....while selling the most advanced Ubuntu compatible hardware.
Ubuntu Foundation stores with a heart and soul, unlike the Apple stores.

Sure, I'm in... but I'm a newby. I've been running 6.06 for about two weeks now, with varying degrees of success and failure. Overall, I'm excited about Ubuntu and will continue to run it as my primary OS until I have reason to do otherwise. I like Linux as well and the CLI; very useful for getting out of jams.

I also would like to acknowledge the Wiki Team, and efforts lead by useRESA, the WIKI Team for The NU Ubuntu Team, consist of volunteers who live outside the region, who want to help with the effort...and this is greatly appreciated and needed...

Hi "NU Ubuntu Team" ...
I decided to reply to this post in order to quickly introduce myself.
I have been a member of cafeLinux since just over a month now and when I read a post by Jozef that he needed help in setting up the WIKI, I volonteered.
Jozef, generous as ever ;), now made me WIKI Team Leader.
Although I can hardly physically contribute to the objectives (I live in the Netherlands), I do hope that I can support by helping maintain the WIKI.
If you would like to know more about me, go here: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Useresa
Kind regards, Resa

useResa and Rowan, I would like to commend both of you in your noble efforts...
I encourage all Ubuntu users from any region in the world to help contribute to the marketing viability in The NU Ubuntu Team region, my plan is to create a dynamic, marketing and educating system not only in The Northeastern USA LoCo team but I would like for our team efforts to be felt world wide, Partnering this project with cafelinux.org, an international Linux Portal, has attracted developers from all over the world to come together and work on Linux products and/or humanitarian efforts.
Our primary objective is still to make The Baruch Spinoza University at cafelinux.org, a viable and dynamic functioning University, free education for the world
With this said we need developers and teachers to get the Moodle course management software up and running so we can begin to hold classes, we have some volunteer professors already who will teach Linux courses and we even have a staff developer who will eventually teach hebrew....I hope that more language volunteers will come on board...
I have been working behind the scene to bring more Linux Developers together to cafelinux.org
A common home for developers to call home and a place where we can host unique Linux projects...and all contribute to the commonality of good in the world...
The transition of Linux for Clinics (Medical Ubuntu) to become a sub-project of the cafelinux.org family is just one example...of the power of unity that Linux developers can acheive...
I have more projects that I trust will become sub-projects with the cafelinux.org family...
There is much planned and I again invite all to come and be a part of a dynamic grassroots Linux/Education/Humanitarian movement....the reality of dreams are being realized now....so come and join

It is sometimes added by some groups for demographic & statiscal research as the map posted illustrates,...Virginia was added by request, and I added West Virginia...
As a centralized group we can collectively pull our resources together to be more effective then a bunch of little groups...
State, city and local groups within The NU Ubuntu Team region is encouraged and a close affliation is key to future marketing and educational success overall...

This is a definition defined by the map in the opening post. That originated from the Wikipedia. Most importantly over all is it is a definition and LoCo community team that works and we have many Team managers that represent local, regions, states and cities within our Team. So in essence this makes our region feel like a small town.
We can pull our resources to market more effectively and this has worked with great success.
I actually live as the NU Ubuntu Team leader in the Washington DC metro area...
http://img307.imageshack.us/img307/1272/usmapnortheast8zu.png (http://imageshack.us/)
Every portion of this region is easily accessible for all our members, as I do plan a local community convention for the NU Ubuntu Team in the near future, once we have a critcal mass.

This is from the opening post of this thread which defines this team:
As defined by the Census Bureau, the Northeast region of the United States covers nine states: Connecticut (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Connecticut), Maine (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maine), Massachusetts (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Massachusetts), New Jersey (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Jersey), New Hampshire (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Hampshire), New York (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_York), Pennsylvania (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pennsylvania), Rhode Island (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rhode_Island), and Vermont (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vermont). Some unofficial classifications of the region add Maryland (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maryland), Delaware (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Delaware), District of Columbia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/District_of_Columbia), Virginia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Virginia), and West Virginia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/West_Virginia). We will include all 13 states listed above and the District of Columbia in our local teamand I have found the origin of the map:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Northeastern_United_States
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:US_map-Northeast.PNG
Here is some 411 about our little part of the world included in the NU Ubuntu Team:
Its largest city, New York City (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_York_City), is also the largest city and metropolitan area in the United States.
As defined by the US Census Bureau, the Northeast region of the United States covers nine states: Connecticut (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Connecticut), Maine (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maine), Massachusetts (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Massachusetts), New Jersey (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Jersey), New Hampshire (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Hampshire), New York (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_York), Pennsylvania (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pennsylvania), Rhode Island (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rhode_Island), and Vermont (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vermont). Maryland (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maryland), Delaware (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Delaware), and the District of Columbia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/District_of_Columbia) are often included in the region as well. Many government agencies, like the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Oceanic_and_Atmospheric_Administration) (NOAA) and the National Weather Service (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Weather_Service) (NWS) include Maryland, Delaware, and Washington D.C. in the Northeast. More old-fashioned sources restrict the Northeast to New England (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_England), the New York City area (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_York_metropolitan_area), and the Philadelphia area (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Delaware_Valley).[citation needed (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Citing_sources)] While the rest of Ohio is considered midwestern, greater Cleveland (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cleveland) and Northeastern Ohio tend to be culturally (through heritage and patterns of speech) more northeastern than the rest of the state.
The Northeast is also the wealthiest part of the United States. As of 2004, the US Census Bureau reported five out of the six wealthiest states, in terms of household income, as New Jersey (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Jersey), Connecticut (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Connecticut), Maryland (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maryland), Massachusetts (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Massachusetts), and New Hampshire (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Hampshire) [1] (http://factfinder.census.gov/servlet/GRTTable?_bm=y&-geo_id=01000US&-_box_head_nbr=R2001&-ds_name=ACS_2004_EST_G00_&-redoLog=false&-format=US-30&-mt_name=ACS_2004_EST_G00_R2002_US30&-CONTEXT=grt/). As of 2005, the Bureau of Economic Analysis defined the six wealthiest states, in terms of Per Capita Income, as Connecticut (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Connecticut), Massachusetts (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Massachusetts), New Jersey (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Jersey), Maryland (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maryland), New York (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_York), and New Hampshire (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Hampshire) [2] (http://www.bea.gov/bea/newsrel/spi_highlights.pdf). New York (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_York) alone accounts for nearly 8% of U.S. gross domestic product as of 2005. [3] (http://www.bea.gov/bea/newsrel/GSPNewsRelease.htm)

Due to recent Cyber attacks the NU Ubuntu Team has been changed to a restricted enrollment (NOT open) PM or e-mail an administrator if you are interested in becoming a member.
Also note: Membership at The Forums at cafelinux.org is neither required or encouraged to participate in the NU Ubuntu Team.....that forum is primarily set up for cafelinux.org members who happen to be members of the NU Ubuntu Team.
This policy change is effective immediately to prevent further Cyber attacks at cafelinux.org, so every weak link is being sealed.
The NU Ubuntu Team has functioned independent of a support forum and all communication between members can be continueed to be made via e-mail.
Any questions? PM or e-mail me.

I can help out! I cant go to any meetings or anything, but I can hand out CDs and probably give support by email. I am in southern New Hampshire really close to Nashua, NH, a huge city for shopping and what not, many people from mass. come up to shop with no sales tax. I'll need to order some disks though.

I just think I joined from a link on launchpad. I'd like to help in anyway I can. I am kinda indisposed right now for about another month or so. My tux kinda points to where I am right now, but once I am stateside I'd like to help.

Southern Maine (ugh.. the armpit of Maine...Sanford) checking in! *salute*
Not really knowledgeable in the *buntu ways as much as some but I did ditch Vista on my new HP dv6000 laptop in favor of Ubuntu.
Been using computers since the TRS80 days (ahh the good old days...remember 5.25" disks?) and can learn just about anything (programming aside. I get to arrays in any tutorial on any laguage and get lost) if given the time and resources for learning.
I hope that there is something going on with this group but am not to optimistic since the last post here was back in August of 2007.
I am already a member on launchpad of both this group and the Maine-iacs.
Please tell me someone in 9 or 12 states is active here:(
