Can't boot after upgrade from 10.04 to 10.10

I did the upgrade from within Ubuntu by using the update manager. I'm using grub, and can still boot into Windows. I'm currently running Ubuntu from a USB live stick. Here is the output from boot_info_script.sh:

The screen goes black, then it says "Ubuntu" with 4 or 5 dots under it like it's loading, and then the screen just goes black (more of a pinkish black) and stays that way.

This looks more like a backlight issue. Do you have a flash light? try lighting your screen with it and see if that "pinkish" black is only your interface without backlight (you will be able to see some colors witht he flashlight) please confirm this.

I can see very little wrong with your boot script output, certainly nothing that obviously would prevent you from booting.

Your /etc/fstab references a now non-existent swap partition on sda, and the swap partition on sdb will not be mounted because there is no /etc/fstab line for it. At worst you would get an error message on bootup which you could bypass.

The other thing about your /etc/fstab is that four NTFS partitions are referenced with device names rather than UUIDs, but if there was a problem with this you would get an error message on bootup.

You're not really telling us much saying that you can't boot. What happens? Where does it get stuck? Do you get an error message?

One thing you could try is to highlight the Ubuntu entry in the grub menu, press 'e' to edit the stanza and then remove "quiet splash" from the linux line. Then ctrl-X to boot and see what the text output shows just before the process gets stuck. That may give a clue.

Have you tried booting into one of the old kernels?

EDIT: I was typing as you posted so you've given us some more information now. Try removing quiet splash after you've tried Basher101's suggestion.

Flashlight thing did nothing, the backlight is on, as opposed to when the screen is completely black. I loaded kernel 2.6.31-11 and I can boot, but the update manager is telling me to run a partial upgrade.

So its not a backlight problem...well since i do not use 10.10 i don't know where to search for the problem. Video Drivers maybe? Or rather, what updates does the manager want you to install?

Open Synaptic Manager, click on Reload, then mark all upgrades and then apply. Don't OK the last, but see what or if it wants to install. If it's a long list, we can try this from the terminal to get more information.

That's a lot. It sounds as though you had an incomplete upgrade for some reason. The kernel that is working is the 10.04 one, so it looks as though you might have some sort of hybrid system.

Before telling you how to do it from the terminal, let's check a few things. From a terminal:


cat /etc/lsb-release

If that tells you that you are running Maverick then that doesn't get us anywhere. If it says Lucid then definitely you have an incomplete upgrade.

Next, navigate to /etc/apt in a file browser. Right-click on sources.list and open in gedit. It will be read-only so you can't do any damage. Ignore all the lines beginning with a '#'. Do all the others have "maverick" in the line. If any have "lucid", then there's some repairing to do.

From the terminal, you would normally first do:


sudo apt-get update

But you've done that with the Synaptic reload. Now:


sudo apt-get -s dist-upgrade

The -s option does a simulation only. It tells you what it would do but doesn't go ahead. Highlight the output, right-click -> copy and paste that into your post.

Bingo! I *think* I can see the problem:

All the cups stuff is probably a normal Maverick upgrade and is probably safe. But the fglrx driver could be the problem. You've possibly still got the old Lucid fglrx driver which is why you don't get the desktop with the Maverick kernel. Possibly.

If you let apt-get uninstall fglrx, you may be left with bits behind. My suggestion would be to completely uninstall the fglrx driver, see if you can boot into the Maverick kernel and then complete any possible upgrades. And only then consider re-installing the fglrx driver. I'll leave you with this link to read:

It's probably best to do the "Problem: Need to fully remove -fglrx and reinstall -ati from scratch" section.

That's a good find and I'm glad it worked.

Now that you're in a successfully upgraded Maverick (I hope!) using the open source ATI driver, you might want to see how you get on with that video driver before considering re-installing the proprietary fglrx one. I don't have experience of your particular Radeon HD 4850 card, but I have two machines with earlier 4*** series GPUs and the open source driver is more the adequate for my needs. See how you get on. My brief experiences of the fglrx driver have not been happy and it looks as though you've encountered another problem that it causes.
