I am a completely new user here.

After I installed Ubuntu 10.04LT, logged in as su, typed in "apt-get update", I got the process going till 46% percent, and then it stuck for a while, and told me that none of those packages were accessible.

Those packages are supposedly to be located at pt.archive.ubuntu.com, and I can't ping to it, nor open it from a web browser.

How can I update ubuntu? Can anybody help me with this problem? Thank you very much!

Okay, problem solved.

I need to go to Systems-> Administration-> click the button "Settings", and click the tab "Ubuntu Software", and change the "Download from" selection.

Then I could finish my update.

Some servers are down, but others are running.

@TrueStory, welcome to the forum and I'm glad you managed to solve the problem.

Yes, occasionally an individual mirror will be down. As you've found you can change your download server to get round this.

By the way, I'm slightly concerned by your logging in as su comment. You are, of course, at liberty to configure your system as you wish, but you might want to read this link:

Thank you very much for the reminder!

I am using it as I am following some company procedures. As I am new to ubuntu, I won't touch "su" when I don't need to. Thank you!
