I have Ubuntu and Windows XP and I really am comfortable with XP. I would like to update Ubuntu to the latest version and start to use it more and familiarize myself. I have a C:\ and and D:\ on this computer. I don't have enough space for a partition on the C:/ as I only have about 15GB and would like to leave that opened. Can I install and run ubuntu from the D:\ drive? If I can how would I go about doing so..?

Not sure if I understand what you attempt to achieve. Do you want a dual boot configuration with Windowx XP and Ubuntu? Then you can install on into the D: partition, but you will loose everything in that partition.

When you say you have Ubuntu already, is it on the same computer? If so you can update (upgrade) it where it is, you don't need a new partition.

If you do need to create a new partition, the normal Ubuntu install process will resize existing partitions to create a new one, preserving your data (although you should back up first, as there is always the possibility of an error).

Yes, it is on the same computer. I have a dual-boot already with an older version of ubuntu on my C:\ drive. I want to get rid of that and put a partition on my D:\ drive which is 1TB and has 700GB of free space. How would I loose everything on that partition if I have all that free space?

sure you can when installing there will be a part that asks you about where you want to install it. pick the one that you are calling D http://blog.sudobits.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/alocating-drive-ubuntu.jpg

and you are good to go. you might have to play with your bios and boot order but it 100% should work :)

Depends what do you think that you are going to do with it <-------------hard drive space but ubuntu needs 4 gigs I think to install bare bones. 50 is ok but if you got more on that other drive ....
