I am sure the real answer to that is "when it's ready", but if you want to run on the bleeding edge there is a ppa for the unfinished gimp 2.8, currently version 2.7.3 which you can find at https://launchpad.net/~matthaeus123/+archive/mrw-gimp-svn

This version provides the single window layout which everyone (except me?) seems to want, but you have to set that layout each time you start gimp at the moment. Try that if you want to; it seems quite stable to me, but your setup may differ.

No not just you...I hate the all-in-one GIMP...I'm right there with you. :)

I would love the non-single-window-mode if the toolbox acted like an ordinary window and would fall under the content window when it lost focus, and if keyboard shortcuts would work properly when the toolbox did have focus. Single Window Mode is a nice workaround, but the problem with the alternative is in the implementation, not the idea.

Me too ..... the single window mode does not suit me on dual screen .... and the save
replaced with export for jpgs - and save as xcf all the time - rather than a choice - does my head in ......

I use the older version and continue to use it ....... PSPI still works .... and a lot of other things that I find useful ......

Good to see the new version 2.8 is out in December though ..... if they make it run alongside the older version I might try it out .......

You can set the toolbox and layers windows to act as "Normal windows" in the preferences dialog of gimp so they can be beneath the main window if that has focus. It is very annoying as you say to have the toolbox permanently on-top; heaven knows why that is the default setting as it is utterly ridiculous in my opinion. See screenshot.

It is also going to be a user option in 2.8 whether to have the single window layout or keep using the current separate window arrangement when it is finally released.

Oh my goodness!!

I don't know you either, so perhaps we had better just leave it as admiration?

When it's ready :) No new feature are being added to 2.7, all work is devoted to finilizing 2.8.
