I am running Kubuntu 10.10 on my laptop, and a while ago I clicked the popup for the 11.04 upgrade. I looked over the list of packages that it was going to upgrade or remove, and GIMP was on the remove list with no upgrade listed. As I use GIMP daily, I did not proceed.

My question is why is this package uninstalled by the upgrade? I have seen some posts online from others who described problems installing GIMP in 11.04 so I have not yet upgraded.

There were plenty of other packages that were going to be left alone. Yet GIMP was listed to be removed, and I could not find any way to prevent the upgrade from doing this.

I posted this in the "Art & Design" forum yesterday, and then I thought it might be better here instead as this is a main discussion area while "Art & Design" is part of "Other Community Discussions".

Thank you for digging that up. It describes why they don't ship Gimp in part of the regular installation, but it doesn't really answer the question of why the upgrade wants to remove it from a working system. There are other packages - I think inkscape was one of them - that were listed to be upgraded by the Kubuntu upgrade, and of course others that would be left alone. Gimp, however, was listed specifically to be uninstalled.

That, I still haven't found an explanation for. Why uninstall working software?
