So I have turned off visual effects, sudo apt-get remove'd compiz*, gone to Synaptick Package Manager and removed everything that comes up with a compiz search... and yet STILL the windows are snapping. How do you remove this feature???

LOL:D By removing Compiz you ended up using Metacity's snapping windows feature! And - as opposed to Compiz - it doesn't seem to be possible to disable this in Metacity at all.

So, install Compiz again, also install CompizConfig Settings Manager if it isn't already:

sudo apt-get install compiz compizconfig-settings-managerAnd then just disable "Snapping Windows" in "System -> Preferences -> CompizConfig Settings Manager -> Window Management".

Greetings.

Awesome - thanks. I'd just add one thing: "compiz --replace" to enable compiz again :) Also, background effects must be selected as normal (or at least not turned off).
