its true that kubuntu has less support than ubuntu. it will always be a fundamentally gnome based distro. however, that doesn't stop you from trying out both to see which you like best.

Yeah, just do a
sudo apt-get install kubuntu-desktop, and you can always go back to GNOME if you want.

I have tried Ubuntu, Kubuntu and Xubuntu...I think that you will get good support for all three here in this community.
I would say start with Ubuntu first but try all three eventually. Honestly it is a personal preference type chioce.
even though KDE upon first apperance has a little more Pomp an Circumstance initially, you'll find Gnome can have just as much bling too.
see my link below, and remember you can customize Gnome to your desired likings as I am sure you can do with KDE, and xfce.
I have heard "Engage" in xfce is supposed to make you forget about gnome and kde but I don't know this first hand.
I currently use the GNOME desktop in Ubuntu.

You could install both and see which one fits your needs, anyway both are good and well supported.
Don't forget XFCE which is as good as KDE and GNOME.

Yeah, just do a
sudo apt-get install kubuntu-desktop, and you can always go back to GNOME if you want. But if you do it that way, you'll be sorely disappointed when you try
sudo apt-get remove kubuntu-desktop and virtually nothing gets uninstalled.
If you want to try out KDE, follow these instructions:
