I am currently running Kubuntu 10.10, and it works very well on my system currently. I've been seeing the popups offering to upgrade to 11.04 for some time, and I clicked on it a while ago to look into it.

I noticed that it wanted to uninstall Gimp in the process - and made no mention of an upgrade or anything else. I can't seem to figure out why it wants to do that, and I have seen a few comments online from people saying that they have run into trouble trying to install Gimp on an 11.04 system.

Gimp is currently a critical part of my day-to-day existence, so I am putting off the 11.04 upgrade for now until I get to the bottom of this.

Does anyone know why the 11.04 upgrade uninstalls Gimp?

Because they removed GIMP from the initial installation image. You can very easily re-install it through the software centre or add the PPA and get the latest version.

Possibly because gimp is no longer part of the default install.

While it's possible that installing it in a ubuntu setup it caused no issue here installing it to a xubuntu setup.

Even if they removed gimp from the default install, an upgrade surely shouldn't remove programs you already have installed. I'd report this as a bug.

I think your reply may have stated my concern more clearly. Plenty of other applications that I have installed were not listed to be uninstalled by the upgrade, but Gimp was on the uninstall list.

It isn't unusual to see deprecated libraries show up on the uninstall list as various projects merge or die off, but seeing an application that is in active development end up on the uninstall list is a little unsettling. Couple that to the assorted problems reported by people who have tried to install Gimp on Ubuntu 11.04, and it makes me a bit nervous to do the upgrade and risk losing what for me is a critical application.
