Why is Firefox and Chrome set to really old versions? Yesterday Update Manager updated Firefox to ver 3.6.22. Chrome is at ver 12.0.742.112 (90304) .

Are not the newer versions more secure?

10.04 means "April 2010" and so most software in Lucid is over 1 year old.

The browser is the exception, actually. Firefox 3.6.22 was released just 3 days ago (https://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/3.6.22/releasenotes/) and is considered very stable and secure by the Ubuntu developers.

If you want to install a newer Firefox/Chromium then just do a quick forum Search, the topic has been discussed many times. ;)

I am using the Firefox developer stable PPA to get the most current development stable version of Firefox on 10.04 LTS. It is Firefox 6.0.2. This page should explain why the 10.04 and 10.10 repos have old versions and also give instruction on enabling the PPA if you want it. http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1712247

I would suggest to stay with Firefox 3.6 only as the newer version are getting updated too frequently and hence playing havoc with plugin compatibility.

For eg.. Compatible version of Novell Moonlight is still not available
