I've looked at getting my MCSE for a while now,

But, I've been having a little change in heart and would like to learn unix and linux first. Are there any really thorough programs out there that go through the Linux and/or Unix core?

BTW, I live in canada. That might make a difference for what's available, but I doubt it.

Thanks for any info.

Perhaps the Red Hat Certified Professional (RHCP) certification?

You should also take a look at LPIC as it's more vendor independend:

Is it still a viable option getting linux Certified or any other computer Cert? from what i have heard those with cert's are frown upon in the IT feild as not having knowledge of what they are certified in or taking the easy way out. just wonder if it was still looked down on or is it a good option?

I've heard of the following, haven't done much looking into the latter two though:

Red Hat Certified
LPI
Cisco
A+

Any of them could suit your needs.

I have been working through the LPI certification program.

It appears to be well respected in the industry, and well worth going for.

You certainly shouldn't have any problems in Canada as that is where the LPI organisation is based :)

There is a variety of materials available for self-study (particularly for the 101 and 102 exams). This includes my own site:

Currently I have only got 101 information (including practice exams), but more will be added soon.

CompTIA who makes the A+ test also has a test for Linux+.
