Is there an alternative to using Flash in such things as YouTube and BBC news website? I think most of the problems I've had in the past with Fedora and Mandriva have been with Flash and it looks like I might have the same problem with Ubuntu.

Have you tried Flash-Aid (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/flash-aid/versions/)

usually sorts all flash issues for everyone.

It is for firefox but once you install it it runs and then you run it to install the best flash for your system then that works across browsers.

Gnash and Lightspark are in the software center . but I have never tried either . Flash Aid is great way to install and update Adobe flash . Adobe has always worked well for me with Firefox and Opera .

Flash Aid will install the correct version , so if running 64 bit you don't get 32 bit with a wrapper as is usually offered in the software center . The 32 bit wrapper version causes performance problems for some users.

Thanks. It turned out to be nothing to do with Flash after all...
