I remember reading about it once, but after searching and searching now I think I may have imagined it or something! :)

Not sure if that's the one I read about, but it does what I require, so THANKYOU.
It's not exactly as smooth as YaKuake, but it'll definitely do! :)

yakuake is amazing, and propfessional looking.
tilda is a good alternative, but definitely not as good.
is there anything bad about just using yakuake even thought it's KDE ?
is it just the look you're worried about ?

Its great - I use it on gnome with no problems, although I understand its even better on kde.

Yup, in KDE there is a little more control over stuff like transparency, but it does indeed work fine in gnome. I believe that it depends on some KDE stuff that gets installed though.

There are less than 5 points keeping me from migrating to GNOME. Missing Yakuake badly is one of these.

Well, I don't see why Yakuake keeps you away - I am running Gnome and using Yakuake just fine.

And if you add Compiz + XGL (for nvidia) or Compiz + AIGXL (for ATI ... I think), you can make anything transparent - I've got my Yakuake set to be 50%, Set for light background (adjusts text color), and I dropped the gamma on it a little. makes it look very cool, like smoky tinted glass.
