View Full Version : [SOLVED] GRUB RESCUE after Ubuntu 10.10 -> 11.04 upgrade

So to start off I'm a complete Linux newb, and I originally installed Ubuntu 10.10 to learn a little more about it.

I have a laptop and a desktop. Both computers had Ubuntu 10.10 installed on them. On the laptop Ubuntu was installed in a dual boot configuration on a single partitioned hard drive. On my desktop Ubuntu had it's own separate drive. I have 4 other hard drives 1 TB each running in a RAID 10 setup. I upgraded from 10.10 -> 11.04 on my laptop first and it went off without any problem.

When I upgraded 10.10 -> 11.04 on my desktop all hell broke loose. I choose all the same options as the laptop upgrade, but it didn't work out as well, lol. I think the problem originated at the end of the upgrade when it asks you about the boot configuration. I chose the first option which was something like "use the manufacturers boot blah blah". When the computer restarted it went through the POST and I was left at a "grub rescue>" prompt. I messed around with a program called Rescatux. I think what I ended up doing was installing a MBR to the sde drive which is my separate hard drive for Ubuntu. I changed the boot order in my BIOS to the separate drive with Ubuntu first and now it will boot into Ubuntu fine but it has no boot loader.

My question and probably complicated is, how do I restore it to the way it was before? With the GRUB2 boot loader and the option to boot into Windows 7 (on my four hard drives in RAID 10 setup) along with the option of booting into Ubuntu 11.04 on the separate drive?? I have a boot script text file output that was generated from the Rescatux program. Should I post the output to this thread? Not even sure what's in the text file.

Thank you in advance for any help restoring my system to a working condition (mainly Windows 7)

For starters, boot into your ubuntu OS. Open a Terminal and run code


sudo update-grub

reboot and see if that fixed it.

Ok I'll give it a shot! I just ran it and it's looking good so far!
It seems to have found all the different images. Now time to reboot and see if it worked.

No luck. It would appear after using the Rescatux program that my MBR is now located on my sde drive or the separate drive for Ubuntu. Running sudo grub-update was successful in creating a GRUB2 boot loader which I can boot into Ubuntu 11.04 but I still can't boot into Windows 7. If I try getting into Windows I get the error

Status: 0xc000000e
Info: An error occurred while attempting to load the boot configuration data.

Also the BIOS boot order is still backwards, most likely cause the MBR is located on the small non raid drive for Ubuntu. If I swap the order back to the original order and try to boot from my raid drives I get the following error:

error: symbol not found: 'grub_env_export'.
grub rescue>

and I'm left at that command prompt. *edit also if I type "ls" at that prompt I am left with this:

(hd0) (hd0,msdos2) (hd0,msdos1) (hd1) (hd1,msdos5) (hd1,msdos1)

Any ideas on how to get the MBR back to the raid drives and get everything working?

ummhhh, RAID usually scares me away, it's a whole different ball game out there.



Is your RAID a software RAID,?
fakeRAID?
Hardware dedicated RAID controller card?

If we don't get this fixed right away, I can suggest you post a new thread including the word RAID in the subject line,

please post the output of

sudo sfdisk -luM

Also download & run boot_info_script.sh (http://bootinfoscript.sourceforge.net/):
then post the text of the file RESULTS.txt into a new reply, pasted between code tags.

The very first paragraph in the RESULTS.txt file (thanks for adding code tags) states that Testdisk is installed to the MBR of sda, so, if you're booting from sda first, switch around your BIOS first boot device to one of the other drives sdb, or sde that has grub installed to the MBR and see if you can boot at least.

Beyond that, you'll have to wait for some other interested soul, I can't help much with RAID Grub installs yet.

Yeah if I change around the BIOS boot order and make the sde drive first with GRUB2 on it, it'll boot fine to Ubuntu, but the problem is I still can't get access to Windows. Got to love computer problems.

Look, seriously, you could get help fast by starting a new thread.

RAID GRUB RESCUE after Ubuntu 10.10 -> 11.04 upgrade or some such similar line...........

I would be sure to include the word RAID in the subject.

Mark this thread SOLVED please if that's what you decide to do.

So your sda & sdb drives are your RAID Set, yes? Did the link included in post # 8, say how to deal with that situation?

Yeah sda & sdb are half of the RAID 10 setup, sdc & sdd are the other two drives of it as well.

Also the link in post 8 wasn't very helpful as Ubuntu in on the non-RAID drive, but thanks anyways. The first 4 hard drives are the RAID array and for Windows 7 only. Now hopefully the other thread will generate more info on how to get it back in the boot loader!
