View Full Version : [SOLVED] Any Xubuntu Guides for N00bs on WMdock and Apps?

Hi,

I posed this same question in XFCE Forums with no response, so thought I would ask here.

I made my transition to Xubuntu 10.04 and XFCE 4.8 this last week. I was reading today, about Window Maker and it's apps, to try to understand how to use the apps with WMdock, in the panel.

I would like to use them; especially for a dock that can house my different Web-browsers and links to Web-sites, for quick access from the panel. I have only limited knowledge of using command paths to apps and no knowledge of scripting, for use of them.

Is there any Xubuntu documentation, that speaks to this?

Edit: Or, is there anyone using WMdock, familiar enough about it, to suggest an easy way to use it, with the WM apps.

Thanks.

Maybe a link to what you were reading so far? I haven't heard of this plugin or the dock apps it's supposed to handle.

re: actually installing the plugin, you don't need to compile it as there are deb files (32 and 64 bit) in the Ubuntu repos (http://packages.ubuntu.com/natty/xfce4-wmdock-plugin), so you can just install it...
sudo apt-get install xfce4-wmdock-plugin

hhh,

Thanks for the reply.

Here I have been asking all over for guides and stuff to attach apps to Window Manager and what I should have said is Window Maker. WMdock can be added by right-clicking on the panel and can be found under Add New Items, by scrolling down to It.

You probably know about Window Maker, but here are some links about it and for some apps:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Window_Maker

http://xwinman.org/wmaker.php

http://web.cs.mun.ca/~gstarkes/wmaker/dockapps/

I think I am just going to have to just start playing with the WMdock apps, to find my way around.

Thanks.

Agreed. I knew it was Window Maker apps, but Window Maker is a project that has been dead for 5 years. Also, I'm on Xfce 4.6 on Debian, so I couldn't really help you effectively test things even if I did want that applet.

Good luck.

why would you need that when xfce4-panel can already stack apps on a single launcher.

Yes Kerry_S, I guess I will do that. I was intrigued when I saw WMdock, as an option to attach to the panel, so I was hoping to try it. But after learning it is a dead project from hhh, I probably won't pursue it for now. I want to work with getting XFCE functioning to my liking before playing with dead projects, that may or not be satisfactory. Also, the WMdock keeps un-attaching itself from the panel (along with some other applets too). What's up with that? -> Luckily, nothing that I use!

I'll mark it as solved.

Thanks guys!

just in case you didn't know, you can drag & drop from xfce app finder to the open properties window of the launcher, makes it easy to stack up the apps you want.
