It'll be interesting to see how much notice the government actually takes of such petitions. The UK governments have messed with the idea of e-petitions before, but really it's been used as a way to let citizens vent a little steam and for governments to say the petitions are "proof" that they're listening to its people - but I can't think of any important legislation that has been affected by an e-petition. Kinda like when miners and students and whoever would hand-deliver a petiton to the police officer "on guard" at 10 Downing Street (the British prime minister's official residence) - a nice photo op and all that, then the petition is thrown on the fire without a glance.

Petitions from Avaaz.org often have an effect, though they are when appropriate combined with full page advertisements, phone, SMS & "stunts". Sometimes over a million people from all over the world sign the petitions.

Prime ministers & other people in power have complimented Avaaz on the efficacy of their organisation. Having a hundreds of thousands of signatures can be what tips the scales.

Petitions don't work, the only way to get sweeping change in the US is to bribe lobby politicians. Since a lot of things we'd like changed are opposed by companies with a lot more money than we could raise, change won't happen.

Is this thread locked yet?

LoL Government e-Petitions have always been about "bluff democracy" and always will be, and in a lot of cases they don't reflect the will of the whole population.

An International Trade Commission (ITC) judge has ruled that HTC, the Taiwanese Android-based handset maker, has infringed upon two of Apple’s patents. One of the patents deals with data detection technology, which is used in email and text messages, and the other deals with data transmission systems. Overall, the judge has reviewed the issue of ten disputed patents.

HTC, which runs on Google’s Android OS, plans to contest the ruling. [Full story (http://www.telecommonthly.com/2011/07/apple-wins-htc-patent-lawsuit/)]
