Click on this screenshot and see I have typed java in search window in ubuntu software center
now the top three that have check marks are to be installed and that is the latest version for your install.

If you want to make sure your Java is up-to-date, open up a terminal and type:

java -version

This will get you the version and you can compare that with the latest release to see if you have the latest version.

Ubuntu Release I'm running : Linux das-System-Product-Name 2.6.38-11-generic #48-Ubuntu SMP Fri Jul 29 19:05:14 UTC 2011 i686 athlon i386 GNU/Linux

And yes, even though I'm running natty kernel 2.6.38-11 the three sun java apps are from maverick repository, don't ask me why.

yea, I think I can appreciate your situation. I use TDAmeritrade.com/ and they use java to display portfolios, every month or two the graphics for displaying charts breaks, it's either a upgrade in firefox, or @ tdameritrade, it takes weeks sometimes till i figure out the correct java modules and versions to use to make it work again. Good luck with your situation
