I assume that anybody(both staff and regular users) may start the monthly screenshot thread(let me know if there's a problem), so I'll do it.

1. Stay within the board rules, no matter how hot you may believe the wallpaper/screen shot to be.
2. If you are going to quote, there isn't a need to quote an img-embeded picture - Just don't do it. Please just reference the post by page number/page link/etc.
3. Off Topic Posts will be edited or removed.
4. The desktops thread is not to be used as a means to post explicit or suggestive, and provocative images (they must be safe for your kids and/or boss to see). Please help to keep the thread relevant and safe to browse for everyone.
5. The moderators of this forum reserve the right to edit or remove your posts as necessary so they may comply with our Community Rule set.
6. Please use reduced-size thumbnails, out of respect for people running on lower bandwidth or screen resolutions.
7. To avoid having users having to ask you for them. when possible we request that you format your posts in the following order: NOTE this is optional

Themes: Name/where you got it (with link would be nice).
Wallpaper: Name/where you got it (with link would be nice).
Icons: Name/where you got it (with link would be nice).
Programs: Name/where you got it (with link would be nice).

Important Note: Any image posted that is over 800 x 600 will be removed! Use a thumbnail or use a text link to your image. If your image is removed, this is why.

ImageShack causes problems for users in some countries. Please use another image hosting service.

Well, well... Here is MY screenshot. I'm sick and tired of seeing these
slick desktops without a single folder or a single file. The truth is that
many desktops are, very, very messy!

So I hereby announce the Messy September 2011 Screenshot thread.
Show us your muddle!

You're saying that just because of my comment on the August 2011 screenshot thread. I am now regretting it and I have edited my post in order to remove that comment.
Well, starting the monthly screenshot thread a few hours before the beginning of the next month should not be so bad-it's been done before.

What I would suggest is to install Artha on your PC... (even if for no other reason than that it is AWESOME)

One of these flew over our local airport recently. Huge and beautiful! This month I am into Vulcan Bombers.

"The first noted use of "serendipity" in the English language was by Horace Walpole (1717–1792). In a letter to Horace Mann (dated January 28th 1754) he said he formed it from the Persian fairy tale The Three Princes of Serendip, whose heroes "were always making discoveries, by accidents and sagacity, of things they were not in quest of". The name stems from Serendip, an old name for Ceylon (modern Sri Lanka), from Arabic Sarandib, from Sanskrit Simhaladvipa which literally translates to "Dwelling-Place-of-Lions Island"." Copied from Wikipedia.

Switched to Ubuntu on my laptop. It's running openbox with the
luakit browser (light vimperator-esque browser with webkit backend), cmus terminal music player, and apvlv pdf viewer (absolutely great if you are comfortable with vim keybindings). I didn't have room to vifm in there as well, but I've been preferring it to mc lately.

Also to note, tmux is in there too, and is probably the number one reason I havent switched from openbox to a tiler. I especially recommend it if consoles are the only thing that you tile, full screening everything else.

(and the galaxy in the background is M101; its on the wikipedia page if you like it)
Edit: Its hard to tell with the smaller resolution, but the terminal font is terminus, the be-all-end-all terminal font in my opinion.

rTorrent is awesome. I usually run it on the background using screenie, and have it to load automatically the torrent files in a specific folder.

I've tried LMDE with Xfce but I run into some hardware issues, so I'm back to Ubuntu.
Unity is pretty cool, but after playing with more minimalistic window managers, I'm finding it quite slow. I'll probably get back to my WMFS setup.

I'll post my screenshot when I have it running. :)

Yeah, rtorrent is pretty easy to set up, and the folder to watch option is the bomb (not that other clients don't have that). I have no idea why I didn't go for it sooner.

It wasn't even that, I just wasn't into cli apps that much until like two months ago. Now firefox is pretty much my only GUI app :D

But yeah, until you start using CLI programs, the whole change settings via a config file seems weird.

@rtorrent lovers: Is there a way to make rtorrent download specific files from a torrent? It's the reason I stopped using it.

Use the up/down arrows to go to the torrent and press the right arrow to enter its attributes.
Down arrow to go to File list and then right arrow to get into it.
Press space on each file to change their priority; once a file's priority is set to off, it won't be downloaded.

Here's mine on my main desktop:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...enshotUbu4.jpg (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v245/viperdvman/ScreenshotUbu4.jpg)

I've given my Ubuntu 11.04 "Ubuntu Classic" the Mac OS X look  I added the Application menu on the top panel next to the GNOME menu, I changed the icon for my GNOME menu to the color one instead of the monochrome one. I also am using Avant Window Navigator as my dock program. That dock is possibly my best user interface, with all my program commonly-used app launchers and my task manager integrated into it. It easily allowed me to move a couple things that are in the lower panel by default into the upper panel, and thus delete the lower panel.

I love this setup, and it works for the Unity desktop too when I set up the Unity launcher to auto-hide instead of just window dodge. It even works with my KDE desktop as well, though I had to move the panel from the bottom to the top of the screen.

Here is my netbook's desktop:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...hotUbuNet3.jpg (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v245/viperdvman/ScreenshotUbuNet3.jpg)

My netbook also runs Ubuntu 11.04's "Ubuntu Classic" desktop. It's a very similar setup to my desktop computer's setup. The right side of the upper panel is slightly different, with fewer buttons. The GNOME menu too is more simplified, all due to the netbook's narrower screen resolution vs. my desktop's. The app menu is still there, of course, as is the Avant Window Manager. But, I'm using smaller icons in AWN, again due to the smaller screen resolution.

There you have it, my Ubuntu desktop environment setups. Show us yours

Still the default theme? I like the Gaia theme, with Faience icons and a background that was in the preselection for Oneiric.

The rhythmbox icon at the top is a bit of a mistake (Faience didn't seem to have an atunes icon yet, so I changed it to a rhythmbox icon) but apart from that, I'm pretty happy.

Console 2.00-147beta
RainMeter 2.1-r198beta (conky thing)
ObjectDock 2.0

Still the default theme? I like the Gaia theme, with Faience icons and a background that was in the preselection for Oneiric.

The rhythmbox icon at the top is a bit of a mistake (Faience didn't seem to have an atunes icon yet, so I changed it to a rhythmbox icon) but apart from that, I'm pretty happy.

Still the default. Where can I get the Gaia theme from?

Alright, I tried out scrotwm for a while as per el_korako's suggestion.

I liked it a lot. Still, I'm a sucker for the shiny to the end, and I ended up going back to Unity. I did take a few pages out of scrotwm's book.

http://ubuntuone.com/517UqTZJzHEEDrSvhlIS2z (http://ubuntuone.com/3E9PKxFIicwM6fpzNWfRSw) . http://ubuntuone.com/3YKMmag0dkjJLtPtAOkdvB (http://ubuntuone.com/5PP3h0IZfmGQvQDzpHNOTQ)

Details:
DE: Unity w/compiz
Compiz gird plugin for tiling effect (enabled by default in unity)
modified my metacity theme so it doesn't draw the title.
made the unity panel completely transparent. Set the launcher (dock) to autohide (both settings in compiz)
erased the file /usr/share/unity/3/panel_shadow.png (didn't delete it, just erased the contents so it's pure alpha)
Setup background layer to fit my conky and panel area...
wallpaper from the proposed set for Oneric.

Just pure, sweet, Unity goodness

edit:
ok, one last pick to show some more tiling coolness in Unity, all with default settings:

hm, since you like shiny and are trying to do it a little more tiling style, you should maybe give KDE a shot. Kwin can act as a tiling WM, and there's almost no difference in the looks when compared to the real tilers. It's probably heavier, but it's also prettier I guess.

I have problems with KDE. I've spent a fair amount of time with it, and while it is very pretty, I can never get it to actually do anything. I'm already accustomed to a to all my gnome/gtk stuff, and trying to use KDE has proven more difficult for me than any other wm out there.

Plus, as I've already mentioned about a thousand times, I'm totally hooked on the way Unity manages space, and I really like compiz a lot also. I'm using it as a stand-alone WM on my netbook at the moment. I know it really well, and I can almost always get it to do the things I want (and I don't mean wobbly windows and the cube).

I know it is very difficult for tweakers to believe that anybody can actually like Unity, but I really am very happy with it.

el_koraco
September 7th, 2011, 10:37 AM
lol, I'm just giving you some heads up.
It's a pretty good setup, you get tiling and the menus are thrown up on the panel, plus you got a tray that's probably better than dzen or stalonetray or some hack with tint2. So it's more tweakerish than your regular scrotum or awesome :D

oh, and ps, I actually did end up ditching Network Manager for wicd in the end. No matter what I tried, Network Manager didn't want to talk to any wm except compiz.

Unfortunately, systray icon for wicd was too ugly to look at, so I had to blacklist it. Conky gives me all the info I need about my connection anyway.

And yes, the whole thing is pretty tweaked-out... all except the grid. That's just normal Unity.

wicd-curses, I say. You setup a connection, quit it, it doesn't take any resources, when you need to change stuff, you start it up again. A good thing about the curses interface is that it doesn't need X, so you can go to init 1, start networking and wicd, and have it connect, a hojillion times easier than fiddling with iwconfig.

I've seen someone employ those windecs before. Quite neat, what you can achieve with QT, though I still prefer the more traditional rectangular one you're using for "Home", the highlighted corners are a sweet touch. Props for the music too. One of MA's best. Hope you've got shades (or dark global stylesheets) on before launching your browser, though =P

You're overestimate me, btw. I haven't done anything new in months. TBH, I feel I haven't really "themed" since my Openbox days. =(

I like GS quite a bit. I still like workspace switching better with Openbox and tint2, but everything else is awesome to me.

Looks good. Could you link the wallpaper please?

Back to ubuntu 10.10 for a while for some sanity. And using the "world's ugliest media player" as was stated not so long ago in this or the previous month's thread. Doesn't look that ugly to me...

Sorry, I don't have a link. I think I searched for "bokeh" on Wallbase, but it doesn't show up now. I can upload it when I get home.

After having hardware problems with LMDE, I'm back to Ubuntu.

It took me a lot of time to set up WMFS this time.
If it is a newer version, it's a mess. The "Exec:" function does not work properly, the focus is not following the mouse and I had to improvise in order to put the information on the top bar.

^WMFS was a tad buggy on my machine as well. Was also a bit processor-hungry (too many CPU full power cycles when idle). Shame, cos I liked a lot of what it offered.

You could try another tiler. Dwm, i3, xMonad, Awfulwm, Subtle, Ecchinus, Scrotum..... or maybe this unpronounceable thing (http://wwwcip.cs.fau.de/%7Ere06huxa/herbstluftwm/)?

That's because you're trying to pronounce it in English. It means "autumn air wm" in German.

On a side note, I've found a non-terminus font that I like. artwiz-lime from the artwiz-latin pack. I like the nu variety as well, but it doesn't sit well with the bar.

I don't understand what's the problem now, it was a pretty smooth experience when I first tried it.

I've tried a lot of window managers. The problem is that I am very picky.
I like window managers that don't require the knowledge of a specific programming language, and that have a built-in system tray (I need it for skype, thunderbird, etc.).
The only one that I found that meets this requisites is WMFS. :(

Edit:
@el_koraco
Your computer is getting cooler each screenshot. :D
I've never invested much time in trying to get the artwiz fonts working, maybe some day.

Already commented on your scrotum in that other forum (the one that lets me show my avatar without needing to reach some stupid post quota)

The tray requirement's leaving me at a loss for recommendations, tbh.

This is the git version. I haven't tried the other one.

I know a bit of C, but having to compile stuff everytime I want to change something seems to be a hassle.

Yeah, the built-in tray is the hardest thing to find, which is normal since these window managers are supposed to be minimalistic. I know that you can use other trays, but I haven't tried it yet.

Cheers

Ok, no screenshot at the moment. After playing with scrotwm so much, there are now features in it and in Unity that I can't live without. It's a real pain in the *** to have two such options that are so radically different and both so very wonderful.

The existential window manager crisis continues. The more wm's I try, the worse it gets. openbox, awesome, scotwm, compiz... they're all so wonderful. I should probably just stop trying new ones.

There are only two wm's I've tried that didn't stick; KWin (and the rest of KDE), and twn. Needless to say, my objections to each were rather different.
