Is it possible to get my Ubuntu 11.04 system to automatically turn on (or resume from sleep would be an alternative) say at 8:00am every morning if it's been turned off?

On my Macbook Pro it's really easy to do through the System Preferences > Power Savings >Schedule options but there doesn't seem to be any similar settings in Ubuntu.

To do this in hardware, check your system BIOS for an option like "Power On by RTC".
(RTC = Real Time Clock)
