View Full Version : [SOLVED] Is using Fluxbox worth it?

Hello, I've got a few questions here. I've heard of the environment called "Fluxbox". Though I have never used, or actually seen it before, I was told that it is literally as stripped down as it gets, and does nothing besides render minimalist windows.

Can I download Ubuntu 11, or even 10 for that matter, with pre-fluxbox? because most of the google results I've seen are things like post-installs. Which is less than ideal for my situation.

Secondly, is going through the trouble of installing/using Fluxbox worth it? When there are other lightweight desktops like Lxde and Xfce? Is Fluxbox really that much more lightweight?

Any input is appreciated, thanks in advance.

Fluxbox is very minimalist indeed; for me, it's too much so. Ubuntu does not come with fluxbox, you are correct, but it can be easily installed afterwards.

Perhaps a server install, with X/Flux being installed after the fact, or another distro?

Oh really? More so than Xfce and Lxde?

And thats exactly what I need, I'm attempting to restore a dinosaur from 98, and if it has any hope at all of rendering a graphical environment, it is imperative that it is minimalist indeed.

Apparently there was (possibly still going) a fork called fluxbuntu (http://http://fluxbuntu.org/). You could give one of their older versions a whirl and see what you think?

Will do, thanks.

Fluxbuntu is dead and obsolete. Better to install Fluxbox on a current Ubuntu release thru the Software Center or:

sudo apt-get install fluxbox

As to whether or not it is "worth it" what are the hardware specs of the computer?

So old that it doesn't even matter anymore. I'm not sure this thing would be able to render a graphical environment at all, so thats why I wanted to go with an extremely lightweight one if I wanted to try.

The "worth it" was directed towards, since its abandoned, should I even put in the effort trying to get it when I could just use something like LXDE, I wanted to know exactly how much more light Fluxbox was.

Fluxbox was certainly "worth it" to me for one of my old computers. I guess it just depends on your hardware.

Then I'll give it a go, thanks for all your input everyone.
