Hi, welcome to the fora.

Best is first to test that Ubuntu works well on this particular computer. You can run Ubuntu from a CD or a USB stick without changing anything on the hard drive.

You can download Ubuntu from the link in my signature, and after that instructions are here:

1.Go to http://www.ubuntu.com/download/ubuntu/download (http://www.ubuntu.com/download/ubuntu/download) and download the cd image(iso). Select 11.04 version and select 32bit or 64 bit. 64 bit will require about 2 gb ram for optimal performance and 32 bit will require about 1 gb for optimal performance. 32 bit will use 2.5 gb harddisk space whereas 64 bit will require about 4.5 gb. But 64 bit will be much faster. Select any one. download

2.If you use Windows 7 read 3.a. or if you have 2000, xp or vista read 3.b.
3.a.Windows 7

Right-click on an ISO image and choose “Burn disc image”.

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BurningIsoHowto?action=AttachFile&do=get&target=windows7_right.jpg

Select a disk burner (drive) and press "Burn".

If you check “Verify disc after burning”, it will verify that the ISO image has been burned correctly

3.b.2000/ XP / Vista / 7: Infra Recorder

Download and install Infra Recorder (http://infrarecorder.org/), a free and open source image burning program.
Insert a blank CD in the drive and select Do nothing or Cancel if an autorun dialog pops up.
Open Infra Recorder and click the 'Write Image' button in the main screen.

Alternatively you can select the 'Actions' menu, then 'Burn image'.

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BurningIsoHowto?action=AttachFile&do=get&target=infrarecorder3.png

Select the Ubuntu CD image file you want to use, then click 'Open'.
In the dialog, click 'OK'.

4. Go to your BIOS(Press Delete key during startup or whatever it says on ur motherboard manual).

5. Set boot priority to cd first and harddisk second(ur harddisk will be visible as hdd something)

6.Pop the burned cd in the cd drive and boot into it.

7. Follow the instructions. If you want both windows and ubuntu click the dual boot option.

8. Wait for 30 min and you should be done.
