This is because 9.04 is unsupported. Better to download one of the supported versions and install this in stead.

Thanks for the reply. I thought so much.

I have downloaded an ISO for ubuntu 10.04 on my laptop. However I have only ubuntu on my system and no windows now. (I got pissed with frequent crashes so deleted it altogether)

How can i install it without having to write it on a cd (I have a cd reader not cd writer ... old laptop)

Is there a way I can install Ubuntu 10.04 via ISO inside ubuntu 9.04 (something like Wubi?) just a hint would be fine, I can go through any documentation needed myself.

Thanks

Can the laptop boot from USB.
if not burning the CD on another computer is an option.
another option do online upgrade from 9.04-9.10-10.04 long process and could go bad but it does usually work.

Tried booting from USB but need to make a change in BIOS and somehow my BIOS is locked and I have no idea why and how. Its a 5 year old computer and my brother used it before me and he has no clue about any password :(

I can try getting the CD written somewhere else as a last resort if nothing else works.

If the computer is old, Lubuntu or Xubuntu are also worth considering.

Many web sites sell Buntu CD's cheaply.
