Hey all.

I'm repairing a good friend of mine's laptop, and it refuses to boot from USB flash drive. I've tried two flash drives, and they work in another computer but not this one.

I'd use a CD, but the CD drive was crushed (laptop was thrown out of a second story window.. long story) and all I have is USB.

Ubuntu is so much better than Windows Vista.. just gotta get it installed :)

What I've tried:
* I tried CD drive (actually works still.. but I get IO errors once I get to the prompt asking whether to try or install)
* Flashed BIOS
* Two flash drives
* Took laptop completely apart (screen hinges were loose); removing CD drive is a PITA and will take too long to get a replacement in the mail

Any ideas?
