prior to installing ubuntu - its nice to test drive using the Live CD
where you boot up into ubuntu without having to install onto your harddrive.

Only after a successful Live CD boot up should you then actually do an install
Issues like a blank screen or freezes and be flushed out then leaving your PC intact

..try booting with radeon.modeset=0 , acpi=off , nolapic or vga=771

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BootParameters
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/LiveCDBootOptions

..start with "nolapic" since there was a bug wit your laptop, although that was some time ago.

Btw,which ubuntu version?

Hi all, I am also new to Ubuntu and OS installing stuff. I have downloaded the ISO file: ubuntu-11.04-alternate-i386.iso and used Universal-USB-Installer-1.8.6.2.exe on my windows XP to make my 2GB usb stick bootable. Then when I reboot, I can see the screen with menu with some options... Run Ubuntu, Install Ubuntu, advanced install, help etc. And at the bottom it says 5 seconds before reboot or something. It counts down to 0, then goes back to 5. There is a beep sound when I press enter to run ubuntu, but nothing happens. Please help
