Am seeking recommendations. I am looking at getting a modern mp3 player with good screen and intuitave controls for my mum. It needs to be able to sync with mp3 player software in ubuntu. I notice that the vision M and iriver clix both need windows XP. What players do you guys recommend?

I have the Cowon iAudio M5, which is a 20GB hdd mp3 player. It mounts under linux as a usb mass storage device so moving stuff to and from it is easy. I recommend it highly.

EDIT: Thought you might like a link... http://www.cowonamerica.com/products/iaudio/m5/

You could protentially use any mp3 player you want. It's bound to work anyway... well, my Ubuntu has recognized all my hardware/ stuff (except wifi thing) as external storage medium, so it's no trouble. And if you've got amaroK or similar, they should also recognize an ipod if you choose to buy one of those.

I will also play thing encoded in free formats like flac & ogg as well as the proprietary ones.

The site seems to be down right now, this link might work better...also, here's the some of the info from their site.

Minyaliel, I think that alot of the newer players coming out do not simply mount. I have read on these forums of several people having problems with the zen vision M and I believe also with the iriver clix and u10 as well.

You could get an older player in good condition. My Zen Nomad is almost 2 years old now, and although Gnomad is a little inconsistent in connecting with it, it works great. Otherwise, particularly if your mother doesn't need a lot of memory, most of the flash-memory type players should mount as usb flash drives. Myself, I'm keen to get an iaudio at some point because it can play ogg's.

I have an iaudio X5L and it works perfectly with gnome : just plug it in

I've also played with rockbox wich is an open firmware http://www.rockbox.org/
it runs on several models (archos, iriver, apple, iaudio, and others in dev)

I would recommand to buy one of the supported models (to have the choice to use an alternative firmware just in case you're locked by the manufacturer)
