View Full Version : [SOLVED] Problems with dual install, two drives, no boot menu

Newbie query here, but I've just installed Xubuntu 10.10 on my XP system to dual boot and I'm having issues!

The PC has 2 drives, the XP boot partition is on one and teh Xubuntu one on the other. After installation I reset as requested, but the PC just boots straight into XP and I have no way to access Xubuntu.

I'm guessing it's something to do with GRUB being on the wrong disc (this after a bit of Googling) but I have no idea how to remedy it as I'm not really that experienced (did fiddle a while back with Ubuntu but have forgotten it all).

Any advice as to how to access the Xubuntu partition and get a dual boot sorted would be very gratefully received.

Apologies if this is a common query - I have tried to search but with no luck.

Thanks

Matt

Go into you bios setting and change the first boot drive to the drive with Linux on it. Grub is probably installed on that drive.

Thanks - that's got Grub loading, problem now is that I get Grub Error 17 and nothing happens. I've checked a couple of fixes from the net and neither work - the Partition table appears to be OK and when I try and edit Grub in the terminal on the Live CD it tells me grub is not installed.

Sorry to be a pain, I know this is probably simple but I'm getting a tad confused now!

What version of Ubuntu. Grub error 17 is from grub legacy which Ubuntu has not used as the default since 9.04, but you could have it from upgrades to Ubuntu or if you changed boot loaders from grub2.

Post this from liveCD.

Paste contents of results.txt in a New Reply, then highlight entire file and click on # in edit panel(code tags) to make it easier to read.
Or You can generate the tags first by pressing the # icon in the New Reply Edit toolbar and then paste the contents between the generated [ code] paste here [ /code] tags.
V60 has improved formating and requires code tags to make it legible. New Version is a zip file that you have to extract to get .sh to run.

If you just need to reinstall grub2's boot loader to sdb.

Hi, sorry for delay in replying, been busy so couldn't get to PC to do this.

OK, I've downloaded the Boot Info program and got a results.txt. I'm a little worried that this may confuse as I realised after the Desktop CD loaded that I'd left the BIOS switched to boot from the drive with XP on, rather than that with Xubuntu. In answer to the query, I am running Xubuntu 10.10 installed from the said desktop CD, with Windows XP SP3 also installed.

Here's the Results file (hope this inserts...)

I'll reset the PC now and boot with the BIOS switched to boot from the second HDD with Xubuntu on. For reference, if I boot as the PC is now, XP loads without any hint of Linux, if I boot with the second HDD as boot I get Grub Error 17.

I also tried to follow the 'restore the boot loader' link but got an error that grub (as a command) wasn't recognised.

Back soon...

Your 10.10 Maverick uses grub2, but you have an old grub legacy MBR looking in sdb1 to boot.

You should just install grub2's boot loader to the MBR of sdb and it should work. You have what looks like a valid grub.cfg with windows already as a choice if you then boot sdb. Leave the windows boot loader in sda and if you every have problems with sdb you can at least boot sda by changing BIOS.

#Comments are anything after the #, enter commands in terminal session
#Install MBR from LiveCD, Ubuntu install on sdb6 and want grub2's bootloader in drive sdb's MBR:
#Find linux partition, change sdb6 if not correct:
sudo fdisk -l
#confirm that linux is sdb6
sudo mount /dev/sdb6/mnt
sudo grub-install --root-directory=/mnt/ /dev/sdb
#If grub 1.99 with Natty uses boot not root.
sudo grub-install --boot-directory=/mnt/boot /dev/sdb
#If that returns any errors run:
sudo grub-install --recheck --root-directory=/mnt/ /dev/sdb

# If no errors on previous commands reboot into working system and run this:
sudo update-grub

Grub does not use boot flag, windows does. But a few BIOS need a boot flag on a primary partition to let you boot at all. I would just move the boot flag on sdb to any primary partition. But if you have had grub try to boot without a BIOS error then it is not important.

sudo mount /dev/sdxy /mnt
# e.g. sdb6

sudo grub-install --root-directory=/mnt /dev/sdx
# example: sudo grub-install --root-directory=/mnt /dev/sda

# in grub 1.99, introduced with ubuntu 11.04, natty narwhal, a new switch is available
sudo grub-install --boot-directory=/mnt/boot /dev/sdx

Fantastic - I am now writing this from within my Xubuntu install which successfully boots. Thanks everyone for the help.

Small note that there should have been an extra space in the mount instruction above - once I realised that everything was easy.

Now to sort my silent PC...!!!:lolflag:
