net-install: network autoconfiguration failed for e1000e

I put the mini.iso on a stick and I'm having problems getting past the network autoconfig:

grub.cfg boot options:
boot=casper
iso-scan/filename=/ubuntu-11.04-netinstall-i386.iso #renamed from mini.iso
noeject
noprompt
splash

Dropping to the an ash console, i don't have many choices in commands but here are some of the steps i've performed:

I even modprobed e1000 and e100 and then retried hw detection in the install screen with similar results. Does anyone have a clue where to go next?
