no, gnome-shell can work with internal graphics too

You can't put a lot of extra eye-candy on Gnome-Shell (if that is what you use). Compiz doesn't work because GS uses more low-level commands.

You can code extra eye-candy in the form of extensions, but I don't think anyone has done this

PS. If you make your post smaller (in font), I will make mine bigger.

I have had widgets on one of my GS installations, but I don't remember how I installed them (are how they were called). I don't think they are that useful.

You should look on sites as OMGubuntu or WebUpd8.

No, it may be possible (if you do a lot of tweaking), but it will make your system heavy and unstable.

You can run plasma on Gnome 2, but I am not sure if you can do that with Gnome-shell.

Ubuntu 10.04, 10.10 and 11.04 come with Gnome 2. Ubuntu 11.10 coming this October would come with Gnome 3.

There are ways to get Gnome 3 running on 11.04, but I am not sure about 10.04. You will have to use an unofficial ppa and things will surely be buggy (there is a good chance that it will break your system). I would recommend, if you want to try Gnome 3, you should either install a Gnome 3 distribution (like Fedora 15) or wait until Ubuntu 11.10.

Gnome 3 on Ubuntu 10.04 is definitely going to be buggy...

If you want to try gnome3 on Ubuntu, don't like to wait, and don't like to install alpha/beta releases, take a look at gnatty:
