I have installed Ubuntu 10.04 on a Dell Inspiron 1300 laptop. After installing many apps and finding I didn't need some, I did some cleanup. I must've cleaned too much because now Ubuntu won't boot.

On boot, I see the Ubuntu logo with the five dots under it. The dots change color as if something is in progress, but it won''t get beyond that.

I am relatively new to Ubuntu and I want to stay with it because it's an excellent system. I have worked extensively with Unix in the past but not with a GUI front-end.

What is happening and how can I get past this issue?

boot on recovery mode:

if the grub menu is hidden (normal on single OS system): at bios end process, hold "shift" key down to unhide it
then select the second line: recovery mode
and select "repair packages"

finally boot.
