View Full Version : Movies Made After 2005 That Don't Suck

If you don't care to read about what I like or don't like in movies, skip this thread.

Responding to the "Favourite Movies" thread, I realized that I have seen very few good movies that have been made recently. Can you recommend some?

Of course, everyone has different tastes, and I'm a bit of an enigma regarding movies as I hate some very popular ones and love some very unpopular ones, but some examples of what I like and don't like...

Some Favorite Good Movies...
Touch Of Evil, Blade Runner, Monty Python and the Holy Grail, 2001: A Space Odyssey, The Empire Strikes Back, Alien (and the first sequel), Seven Samurai, Frenzy, The Silence of the Lambs, Taxi Driver, Se7en, The Matrix, Twelve Monkeys, Finding Nemo, The Big Lebowski, The Seventh Seal, Snatch, Serpico, The Killing Fields, Murder on the Orient Express (1974), Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, Tampopo, The Wizard of Oz (though it scared the crap out of me as a kid. Whoever started to market it as a children's movie should be shot)

Some Favorite Questionable Movies...
Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me, The Good The Bad The Ugly and most of Clint Eastwood's other work, Animal House, My Name Is Nobody, 2010, Blue Velvet, Total Recall, The Terminator (and the first sequel), Dune, Game of Death

Some Favorite Bad Movies...
The Omega Man, The Eiger Sanction, Enter the Dragon, The Man with the Golden Gun, The Evil Dead trilogy, Drunken Master II, Hellraiser II, almost any Godzilla movie except for the one where they make the freaking monster into an iguana.

Movies Everyone Loves That I Hate Or Am Indifferent To...
O' Brother Where Art Thou, A Christmas Story, A Princess Bride, The Godfather, Brazil (though I should probably try and suffer through it a second time), The Shawshank Redemption (yeah, it's good, but the pacing is sooooo slow, probably intentionally to mirror the experience of prison, not what I want in a movie, Tim Robbins can't act his way out of a paper bag and it's really a remake of Escape from Alcatraz starring Clint Eastwood), Memento (meh).

My opinions of some recent movies...
Gran Torino was great, difficult but great. Clash of the Titans I found to be surprisingly entertaining. I loved Despicable Me (great characters, great soundtrack, really great use of color) and was very disappointed by Toy Story III (disturbing story, annoying characters, hyper realism didn't help the story much). I tried to watch Sherlock Holmes twice and couldn't get through the first half hour. Same for Inception. I enjoyed The Social Network. I really enjoyed Wanted. The young actor who starred in Wanted was awesome in The Last King of Scotland. Kung Fu Panda was awesome, even if I do find Jack Black to be incredibly annoying at this point, how he got cast in the King Kong remake, I'll never know). I caught a film on TV last night called The Lookout and was pretty riveted to it.

I pretty much guarantee you I won't enjoy anything starring Will Ferrell or Adam Sandler.

Hit me with whacha got. Thanks.

-edit- Oh yeah, I haven't enjoyed a 3D movie yet, I haven't seen Avatar and don't think I want to. I'll admit I'm a sucker for a good romantic comedy like Sleepless in Seattle or Working Girl.

After 2005?

The only one that comes to my mind is Inception. You really should give it a second try. It is freaking awesome. Best movie since Matrix.

I also recommend The Triangle, which is actually a miniseries about the Bermuda Triangle.

Only movie I really liked recently (though I don't go see movies a lot nowadays).

EDIT: Also I don't want to pull a :hipster: but most people here apparently don't look beyond high-budget blockbusters, that's very sad.

Since you're open to the kid stuff, I'd strongly recommend Rango. It's on the Pixar to Dreamworks spectrum, in terms of writing style, and very clever. I enjoyed it more than most Pixar movies that weren't Wall-E.

And Ponyo is delightful except for its ending.

@jesus, I saw both Iron Mans, I loved the first one. Second one, meh. I loved loved loved Batman Begins, Christian Bale growling through The Dark Knight really, really annoyed me and I thought the plot was a mess. I'll have to watch it again, Heath Ledger really was as spectacular in it as everyone said. I also forgot that I saw the Star Trek reboot and thought it was spectacular.

Good Bad Ugly is questionable because it's a low budget spaghetti western with mostly Italian actors dubbed in English. It's also one of my favorite movies of all time, Eli Wallach is just amazing in it.

@lovinglinux, I will try Inception again. I know I just have to get past that haklf hour mark, but gawd those first thirty drag.

@Bachstelze, never heard of it. Thanks much for the recommendation, I'll definitely check it out in the next week and give you my feedback.

@Gremlinzzz, lol, check the thread title, Léon came out in 1994! I loved it though, a really good movie. I think Luc Besson is just great, his small part in La Femme Nikita practically made the film. Other movies I liked him in were Ronin, which I forgot to mention is one of my faves, and The Big Blue.

Thanks for the suggestions so far, I'm heading out to see a friend but will check back tomorrow. Cheers.

My tastes are similar. Some of your dislikes I liked, but most all of your likes I liked. A couple I didn't know. I have a similar feeling about current movies, but figured I was just turning into that crotchety old fart that we all eventually become. I rarely go to the theater anymore. I like to go to spill.com for my movie reviews because their rating system is based on what a movie is worth paying.

Have you seen Zombieland? I thought it was pretty good. I liked avatar even though I found it very predictable. Nothing else pops to mind at the moment, though. I was gonna say Unforgiven, but I think it's actually pre-2005. I'm just that far behind in movies. ;)

The Nolan Batman movies have been pretty incredible. Iron Man as a movie not so bad, but the whole giant robot villain is getting old, especially when even Thor is fighting one in his movies too.

But my list of good movies in the last 5-6 years are these:

Adjustment Bureau - Science Fiction done pretty well. Kinda Kubric at times.
Avatar - 2D is just as good
The Departed - Serpico/Donnie Brasco with Boston accents.
The Fighter - Ever notice how Boxing movies are rarely bad.
Inception - I will admit my dad turned it off 5 minutes in. It's trippy and you can get just as lost in what is happening as the characters seem to be.
Kick-A55 - The movie is a super hero movie but also like a prequel to A Clockwork Orange, oh and darkly funny. Change the 5's out for 'S'
Nick and Nora's Infinite Playlist - I somehow think of the move as Woody Allen for people under 25. NYC and a neurotic yet lovable main character.
Peep World - Micheal C Hall (Dexter) and Rainn Wilson (the Office US) in a comedy.
Super - Rainn Wilson trying to be a super hero in real life, pretty dark not a funny as one might expect. But it has Kevin Bacon as the Bad Guy.
Sin City - Frank Miller's dark comic series brought to life, and its amazing.
Star Trek (2009) - but Time travel is getting used too often in the franchise.
Superbad - Almost exactly like my own high school years.
Wall-E - Pixar can't make a bad movie, except Cars 2.
TRON: Legacy - they use UNIX commands!!!! LOL
Zombieland - just good funny zombie fun

The Dune Miniseries is much better than the 1980's movie, I should say closr to the books, aka: no dumb sound weapons.
Shawshank is't a remake or copy of Alcatraz. It's based on a short story by Stephen King. Get busy living or get busy dying.

Shawshank Redemption is based on a Stephen King short story.

I like Godfather II better than the original; it's one of the few sequels that's better than its predecessor.

I tend to follow certain directors that I like their style. In your list I don't think you had any movies by Tarantino, I just love his stuff. I also LOVE most of the Cohen Bros. movies, some of them are just classics.

Suggestions (post and pre 2005):
- Pulp Fiction (1994): The quintessential Tarantino movie, a must see IMHO.
- Inglourious Basterds (2009).
- Kill Bill vol. 1 (2003).
- 127 hours (2010).
- No country for old men (2007), a masterpiece in my opinion.
- Fargo (1996), another masterpiece of the Cohen Bros.
- Pending watching: True Grit (2010), the latest Cohen Bros. movie, judging by the reviews, it seems to be great.
- The Town (2010), probably the best heist movie in recent years.
- The Machinist (2004), a psycho-thriller, great performance by C. Bale.
- The prestige (2006): Chris Nolan is another favorite director, I liked this one more than the Illusionist.
- Rango (2011): The best 3D animation movie I ever saw, check it out.
- Dead End (2003): A horror movie, and although the idea has been done before but the execution and acting are first rate, enjoyed it a great deal.
- The ninth gate (1999), an excellent movie by Polanski, another favorite director.
- The Ghost Writer (2010), another Polanski movie, a political, conspiracy theory type movie, like it a lot.

I think that's enough for now :D Let me know if you saw any of these maybe I can recommend other movie up your alley.

Three movies that come to mind in the 2005-present range as being quite good...

Moon (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1182345/)
One of the best sci-fi movies to come out in a long time. It's reminiscent of 2001 in that it's hard sci-fi, not action/horror/romance/comedy/other genre set in the future. Kevin Spacey does a great job as a HAL-like computer, and Sam Rockwell does a fantastic job acting with... himself and some very sterile sets.

A Scanner Darkly (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0405296/)
Based on the Philip K **** novel of the same name, the movie follows the novel almost exactly. So if you were a fan of one chances are very good you would enjoy the other. The visual style makes it stand out in my mind. Some people find the rotoscoped animation off-putting, but I quite enjoyed the "living comic book" look. It's a very difficult movie to sum up plotwise though; it's about a bunch of drug addicts, and an undercover cop who winds up investigating himself. Just watch it; it'll make sense. Or as much sense as it's supposed to.

Renaissance (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0386741/)
Another animated one. Unlike A Scanner Darkly, Renaissance is almost completely black and white. And I mean that literally; there are very few scenes with shades of grey. The entire film as a high-contrast graphic novel look. The plot is a pretty straight-forward film-noir detective story, set in France in the future, but the voice acting and visual style more than make up for the somewhat lacklustre plot.

I really enjoyed Limitless and The Tree of Life recently.

After 2005?

The only one that comes to my mind is Inception. You really should give it a second try. It is freaking awesome. Best movie since Matrix.

I knew this would be one of the first movies mentioned in this thread, and I knew I was going to cringe when I saw it. I had fun watching it but I have no idea why people think it's so special.

Even though The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly was a spaghetti western, I doubt many people would consider it questionable. The Kill Bill movies are pretty awesome, and they were stylized after the Man With No Name series, so you might like them.

For a good, post-civil war wilderness chase movie, check out Seraphim Falls (2006) (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0479537/). It has Liam Neeson, and Pierce Brosnan. It's a great movie. I didn't even realize that it was Pierce Brosnan until after the movie was over because he looked like a mountain man.

to the op, i see you have a lot of david lynch movies in your like section. my recommendation for you then is "inland empire." it's david lynch's epic, in terms of it's length and absurdness. make sure you have a good bottle of vodka though while you're watching it.

aside from that, i'm not really a movie buff, so i don't know a lot of good movies. i can say that when you get sick of trying to find new movies, then watch everything by federico fellini. preferably starting with "la dolce vita" and "satyricon." but that's technically off topic.

Thanks for the responses everyone, I haven't been in the mood for TV much this week, I only tried one....

First off, to those who said Shawshank is not a remake, fine, have it your way. But watch Escape from Alcatraz (1979), you'll be watching the same movie.

I tried Inception again. I'm sorry, I can't get past the halfway point. I just saw DiCaprio in The Departed, he was amazing in it, but here... they're not making me care about his character, I surely don't care about his dead wife, I don't care about the kid from 3rd Rock (he was good in The Lookout) and he just looks silly with greased hair, I could not care less about that mousy woman who does the mazes, I don't give a frick about how many layers they're going in or how heavy the sedation needs to be or when they're going to get water-boarded. There is nothing for me to like about these characters. In my book, this movie sucks.

If I don't mention you, I still read your suggestion and put it on my list, thanks! Except for Gremlinzzz, I went to midnight shows of RHPC at Boston's Exeter Street Theater in 1981. Never in costume though. Never, ever in costume.

(both with luke wilson, lol)
Ouch. Not as annoying as his brother, but ouch! I'll still check those 3 out, thanks!

@notfound, please give me link to the Leon you are talking about.

@Copper, I have to watch Wall-E first!

@Alwimo, sorry, I hate almost all anime. This is why... http://ompldr.org/tYTcxNw (http://ompldr.org/vYTcxNw)

@fyfe, The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo is one I know about and will watch if the time is right. Never heard of Layer Cake, yes it counts.

@Reg, haven't seen Zombieland, that one I want to see.

@LowSky, some good suggestions, some I already mentioned in my OP, Sin City almost made my OP, I thought the Mickey Rourke/ Elija Wood story was mesmerizing, and holy crap! that's B. Del Toro as a dirty cop?!?!? The original Dune is a hot mess of a movie and will always be on my list of Favorite Bad Movies.

@oldos2er, I saw Jacob's Ladder when it came out, weird movie. That was 1990. Interestingly, I have Silent Hill on my list, and I read J.L. influenced the games and movie a lot. Tim Robbins was OK in J.L. and Shawshank, pretty good in Bull Durham, and awful in that awful Altman film, The Player, I don't care how much critical acclaim that film received.

@Famicube, you better believe I will, STAT!

@buddyd, wow, that's a list. A lot of those I haven't seen (can you believe I still haven't seen Serenity?), but of the ones I have that I didn't already mention (I've seen Pirates I, II and parts of III, I'm, done with that franchise)... The Good Shepard thumbs up, I Am Legend hate hate hate hate, The Hangover didn't I mention I loved it? I LOVED IT! (Hangover II SUCKED), Wolverine I've caught parts on TV, I'll finish it there. I'll watch Limitless for sure (and Sunshine, see above), but The Mechanic? Does Statham play a hit man? Nah, I saw Transporter I and II, I'll watch Snatch again, thanks.

@Ric_NYC, I totally meant to list Pan's Labyrinth/The Faun in my OP, a difficult, awesome, beautiful, sad, scary movie. The best.

@Jesus_Valdez, let it go. You think it's a great movie, I think it's a great movie, I have my criticisms of it. It has one of the best soundtracks of any movie, but that over-the-top tear jerky scene while Tuco is getting beat up? They're walking in the woods and BOOM! they're surrounded by soldiers and ten paces away is an encampment of 5000 men?

@NightwishFan, Ed Norton and hot hot hot hot hot Jessica Biel or the French animated film?

@Khakilang, seriously? Hey, I was in the right mood for Titans, so I'll check it out.

@Whistling Nixie, good find, that's up my alley!

@gutter, sci-fi, check, sentimental sucker, check!

Slumdog Millionaire, Blood Diamond, Babel, Mary and Max, Clerks II, Hot Fuzz, V for Vendetta, The Hangover, 16 Blocks, In Bruges, Tsotsi (2005 but I put it in anyway)

Some I like from prior to 2005 that you haven't mentioned - Fresh, Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai, Perdita Durango (extremely violent), Amilie, Betty Blue, the Three Colours films (Blue, White and Red), that version of Les Miserables from around 1996 that has Gerard Depardieu (very liberal with the story :) - brilliant if you have read the book)

Brazil... my brother used to love that movie and I couldn't stand it as a teenager. I taped over it, he was so mad :) Terry Gilliam films take some getting used to especially if you're young

@PC_load_letter, hoo boy. I'm going to watch your suggestions that I haven't seen (especially true Grit) and I loved Pulp Fiction and Reservoir Dogs and liked Kill Bill I a lot, but...

I haven't like anything else of Tarentino. I hated Basterds, except for the acting of that Austrian, Christoph Waltz. The only Coen movies I've loved are Blood Simple and Big Lebowski, I would watch Barton Fink again, most of the rest meh or bleh, O' Brother is on my list of Top Ten Worst.

@mips, haven't seen any of those, thanks!

@ve4cib, I liked Waking Life a lot, I don't know about Scanner. gutterslob mentioned Moon and our tastes run alike.

@ninjaaron, I don't think anyone mentioned Tree of Life. I saw reviews of this and I'm... hesitant. I'll give it a try.

@forrestcupp, dang, son, why you giving out spoilers? I think Sandler sucks. To each his own.

How could I forget Apocalypto (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0472043/) ?I don't think I even heard about this. I'm intrigued!

Sandler's annoying at best, while Ferrel is just vile on all levels.Just can't be stated enough. YMMV.

@3Miro, I didn't say Dark Knight sucked, I said the plot was a mess, Christian Bale's growling Batman voice annoyed me no end and that I will probably watch it again for Heath Ledger's performance.

@NightwishFan, as much as I hate Albert Brooks, I think Finding Nemo is pretty close to a perfect film.

@DLM955, thanks very much. In my OP I wrote The Man with No Name. I meant My Name Is Nobody, apparently I had Eastwood on the brain. Fixed. I love that movie.

@fenian, never heard of it. I'm definitely interested.

@Lisati, seen it. I loved the bomb/ rubber shark scene. Classic. Julie Newmar was the best Catwoman of that era, but Lee Meriwether sure was the hottest.

@apacketofsweets, noted, though I think a lot of people disagree.

@meh_phistopheles, I've never seen a Fellini film. Shameful, no? Anyway, I WILL take your suggestion. I love movie recommendations that come with alcohol requirements. A friend once recommended "Leaving Las Vegas", but get drunk first. I did (I watched it at home), watched it alone and laughed my freaking *** off. I bet I'd hate that movie sober.

@TeoBigusGeekus, I do enjoy a lot of lesser known foreign films, but it's hard to know what's what. Thanks!

Some Flemish top movies:

* Rundskop (http://rundskop.be) (Bullhead)
* Loft (http://www.loftdefilm.be/) (they are now filming an American version of it with the same director, but other cast. It's about men that rent a loft to cheat on their wives)
* Ben X (http://www.benx.be) (when you pronounce it quickly, it sounds as "Ben niks" in dutch, which means "I'm nothing". It's about an authitic PC gamer)

But my absolute favourite:
* De helaasheid der dingen (http://www.themisfortunates.com/) (The Misfortunates, about a family where everyone is addicted to alcohol and drugs. But it's filmed in a way that every negative side is solved with humour.)

They are all available with English subtitles.

@Ji Ruo... Slumdog Millionaire - not interested in the slightest for some reason, I guess I should though, Blood Diamond - saw it, like it, I'm DiCaprioed out right now, Babel - I like 21 Grams a whole lot, I'll watch that, Mary and Max someone else mentioned, you've got some other's there I'm interested in, Clerks II - saw it, why did I see it, I knew it would suck, it sucked so hard, man it sucked, you announced your retirement K. Smith, retire please or feed yourself to the starving, did I say it sucked?.

@sanderd17, more foreign films, thanks!

OK, give me a month and I'll post back.

No Country for Old Men was just on tv... freaking Coen Brothers. 2 hours and twenty minutes of actors with limited range speaking mundane dialog to an inconclusive finish, all while exploring the theme of fate and uncertainty they already covered in Blood Simple and Fargo? SUCKED

Looks cool... Natalie Portman's film debut... but this didn't come out after 2005... (1994)

K, my mistake, you were reiterating what I said, Leon doesn't fit the thread title.

I'm really not a Michael Cera fan, but I might watch Scott Pilgrim just for the soundtrack!

Don't think anyone has mentioned District 9 (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1136608/) yet. One of the better Sci Fi films of the last few years.

I'll also second Up and Rango, both first-class animated fare.

I also liked the Star Trek prequel. A big budget Hollywood film, to be sure, but the money was well-spent.

And Avatar was dazzling. It has many faults, but seeing it is still a memorable experience. I wouldn't let the cool kids talk you out of watching.

It isn't. A bit of an 'obvious' plot, but the movie otherwise is very high quality.

I tend to be ultra critical of movies and it's easy to pick apart Avatar because of the less than original plot. I also typically find 3D gimmicky and unnecessary.

In the case of Avatar, however... Maybe it was seeing it in a theater instead of on a small screen, but it was so easy to immerse myself in the film that picking it apart was the last thing on my mind. I have never seen a more breathtaking and fully realized alien planet, and the 3D got you as close to being there as possible with current technology.

Avatar is not so much a movie as it is a piece of the most blatant new age propaganda, even by the Hollywood Marxist standards. Of course, since new-agers aren't the most educated or intelligent bunch, there's no subliminal message or anything - men (not so much humans, as men) are evil, men are against the divine Nature, nature is a woman, men are against women, men are cruel to Nature, Nature defeats men.

And here I thought it was an action sci-fi movie with big blue people...

+1 for District 9... then again growing up in South Africa in the period the movie plays out made it twice the fun for me to watch :)

I'm way late to the party on this, but...

Avatar does NOT suck, not by a long shot.

Yes, there were many cringe worthy moments. But I know I'm watching or hearing or feeling something really great when the hairs on my arms stand up, and they stood up at least a dozen times in this movie, and it wasn't the 3D (I watched it in 2D). It was great moments in film, like the seeds of the tree covering Jake (near the beginning of the film) and the best acting I've seen by Sigourney Weaver when she's talking about the school attack. I'll sit through twenty cringe worthy moments if the payoff is one hair-standing one.

My biggest criticism wasn't the story or the stereotypes or the we've-heard-'em-before messages, it was James Horner's musical score. It was so... bland. And done before. And bland and done before and bland and done before and BLAND.

And there a dozens and dozens of borrowed/stolen sources in that movie, Cameron even borrowed heavily from his own movie Aliens. But there was one source that Cameron should have given credit to (maybe he has in interviews, I don't know) because it was so obvious and such a major part of the film...

Early '70's Roger Dean art...

I dont like watching any movie in 3d, but the CG in Avatar is the only one that doesn't have me gritting my teeth when I see it. Quantum of Solace has some very bad CG. Same with the Battle Of The Pelennor in Return Of The King.

Not sure how much you are on the foreign films... but there are tons out there with minuscule budgets that fair way better than some of the hollywood makes.

Micmacs (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1149361/)
Perfume (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0396171/) (one of my top ten)
The Kite Runner (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0419887/)
Slumdog Millionaire (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1010048/)

On the side of things I can't stand Adam Sandler (The Wedding Singer was probably his best work), or Will Ferrel.

Almost forgot, if you liked Snatch, you should see Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0120735/), Snatch was good, LSaTSB was better.

Yes I enjoyed Avatar. It had a cheesy, off-the-shelf story like so many James Cameron films... but it was so brilliantly realised.

Cheesy moments-

calling the mineral 'unobtanium'
the hard-*** general
the natives doing their wavy-arm sitting down dance round the sacred tree
the good ol' white boy showing all those natives how its done
the sassy pilot with a heart of gold

etc.

I dont like watching any movie in 3d, but the CG in Avatar is the only one that doesn't have me gritting my teeth when I see itMaybe it's because I saw it on DVD on a non-3D TV, but I found the color palette horrid. I'm sure it's considered brilliant on a technical level (pixel count, textures, whatever), but it didn't do anything for me on a pictorial level. There was simply no "feel" to the whole thing, imho.

Offtopict: Speaking of avatars, it seems the twats in the ubuntuforum management have deemed me unworthy of having an avatar anymore. WTF?!

Just watched this on tv now, absolutely love the trilogy.

Suggest you watch them in order The Bourne Identity (2002), The Bourne Supremacy (2004) and The Bourne Ultimatum (2007) to follow the story line although you don't have to.

The most distinctive film I've seen in quite a while is Beasts of the Southern Wild (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2125435/). Its six-year-old star deserves at least a nomination for Best Actress; personally I think she should win. Trailer (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2125435/)

If you enjoy animation, go and see the Madoka Magica movies if they come to your city. (Boston sadly has yet to make the list of venues.) They are recuts of the twelve-episode anime series that you can watch online for free at Crunchyroll: http://www.crunchyroll.com/puella-magi-madoka-magica

I found Inception a compelling film in the theater, but not when I tried watching it at home, even on Blu-ray.

I'll also recommend an older film to my fellow older members who may have been around in the days of the Dating Game: Confessions of a Dangerous Man (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0270288/). It's based on the memoir by television producer Chuck Barris (Dating Game, Gong Show, Newlywed Game) in which he claims to have led a double life working as a hitman for the CIA during the Cold War. Even if you have no idea who Barris is, this is either a remarkable story if true, or the ravings of a lunatic.
