When 10.10 Ubuntu was released I tried to use it and everything works good to me aside of my internet connection.I have a network but I dont have internet. The weird thing is sometimes I have an internet but when I reboot my laptop, it lost again. So my option it to put my wired connection again.I googled it many times but im so unfortunate to find a solution. I read some articles that says my wireless hardware is not compatible with the installed kernel module. Then I decided to not use ubuntu and wait for the new version hoping that it would be compatible to my wireless hardware.Last week I tried to update to 11.04 but my problem is still the same.

I look on synaptic and I see that bcmwl-kernel-source and b43-fwcutter is properly installed. And it's on latest version.

My Laptop is DELL Studio 1450

My network connection is DHCP

Here is the specs of my wireless card:
02:00.0 Ethernet controller [0200]: Broadcom Corporation NetLink BCM5784M Gigabit Ethernet PCIe [14e4:1698] (rev 10)

I also run some commands in console and here is the result:

lsmod | grep "b44\|ssb\|wl"

Hi steve,

Thank you for quick response. As I look on the link you posted, the step is the solution Broadcom wirelesscard disabled in Ubuntu 10.10. This is not my problem. My wireless card is always enabled and I have a network. I can ping my router IP which is 192.168.1.1. The thing is I cannot connect to the internet. I read to some forums that this is DNS or DHCP problem(I'm not sure ) but I cannot too much understand since I don't have much knowledge in netwoking.

I hope it make sense.

FYI
I'm now in UBUNTU 11.04 and my wireless driver version is 5.100.82.38+bdcom-0ubuntu3

Thanks

Strange things happen: "lsmod" shows two wireless modules/drivers, namely iwlagn and wl. But, "lspci" you used, only shows a wired device ("Ethernet").

Please show:

lspci -nnk | grep -iA2 net
lsusb
iwconfig
sudo iwlist scan
rfkill list

Yes it's absolutely strange. I know my drivers are properly installed because I have a network. I'm connect through DHCP and router sends its IP to my machine..I know I'm connect to the router because when I ping 192.168.1.1 there is a response.

I verified that router send DNS to my machine through this command

cat /etc/resolv.conf
# Generated by NetworkManager
nameserver 192.168.1.1Here is the result of this following command

lspci -nnk | grep -iA2 net
lsusb
iwconfig
sudo iwlist scan

Unload and uninstall the wrong driver:

sudo modprobe -rf iwlagn wl
echo "options iwlagn 11n_disable=0" | sudo tee /etc/modprobe.d/iwlagn.conf
sudo modprobe -v iwlagn
sudo apt-get remove --purge bcmwl-kernel-source
sudo service network-manager restart
The second line activates the N-mode which is deactivated by default by Intel.

Check:

iwconfig
lsmod
dmesg | grep tail -n25
sudo iwlist scan

After I uninstalled the wrong driver and restarted the network I still don't have internet. I reboot my laptop the I still don't have internet yet. Then during I investigate the problem, I got an internet. So I noticed that I have to wait for 30min-1hr to get an internet after reboot. Why I cannot get an internet upon starting my laptop? This is really strange.

This is what I got after uninstalling the wrong driver:

iwconfig

Hhmmm...

If you can't fix it with a hammer...maybe it's broke.

I have been following this post with interest and remain confounded...Despite your excellent efforts the solution remains elusive. I have taken shovel in hand once more to find a fix but the ground is hard and there are only a few possibly helpful nuggets:

A Gen-too wiki page on a dell x16 with the same broadcam card-working fine-on a 2.6.28rc5 Kernel:

http://en.gentoo-wiki.com/wiki/Dell_Studio_XPS_16

I noticed that your specs showed the Intel Corporation WiFi Link 5100 with the Kernel driver iwlagn and found this page:

http://adeadhamster.blogspot.com/2010/10/linux-iwlagn-problems.html

From the mint forum:

http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=150&t=61755

Research also indicates this card has a troubled past...

Thanks guys for your interest in my problem. Your comments and suggestions are always appreciated.

http://en.gentoo-wiki.com/wiki/Dell_Studio_XPS_16
I think this link is under maintenance mode.
FYI my linux kernel version is 2.6.38-11-generic

http://adeadhamster.blogspot.com/2010/10/linux-iwlagn-problems.html
I tried this one but i think it's pretty much the same with praseodym instruction of uninstalling wrong driver. Unfortunately it also doesn't work.

http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=150&t=61755
And this last one is installing additional driver but when I opened it, the only driver that needed is for my graphic card.

I agree with you steve, that this card has a trouble in the past and compatibility with drivers. That's why I did not pursue a solution after I installed ubuntu 10.10 and it's not working. I just hoping with ubuntu 11.04 is already resolved.

Here is the result this command:

dmesg | grep iwl

This is what I got when I cannot get response from ping command 'ping www.google.com (http://www.google.com)'. Then I repeat it again when I have an internet and there is no difference aside of this one:

If you notice, the difference is the 'Bit Rate=24Mb/s'. Now I think I have an Internet at start but it's really slow. If the Bit Rate is less than 20Mb/s, I cannot get response from ping command. It takes 10-20mins to reach 20Mb/s or more.

I would say it's enough for me if it is sure that I have an Internet after 20mins. I just get a cup of coffee and when I came back, I can do my stuff. I'm also thinking it's a problem on my router but I borrowed my friend's router and the behaviour is the same.

I hope this make sense.
