package manager doesn't work

I been trying to update, but seems to open then close rally fast the same for package manager. So I try to update in terminal and the on'y thing comes up is ree... 50%. I have never seen that the many years using Ubuntu.

Are you using the correct password?? It will just close if not right password.

I am having a similar problem with the update manager. I just upgraded a friends desktop to 10.10 and I clicked on the icon and no update manager. I can update through the terminal, but I like the box that tells me "All done. It's gonna be okay." Any help is very appreciated. Thank you.
