I am trying to get Ubuntu 11.04 onto this but it says it requires 4.4g of space but the iso is only 700mb. I am not sure but I think the SSD is only 4gb. It wont install because it says it requires 4.4g I know this isn't the case because Ubuntu doesn't take that much space. How do I get it to install?

An .iso is a package, similar to a .tar.gz or .zip. Once it unpacks itself it needs 5GB to install.
I have the same system. I use my 4GB ssd internal drive as root and bought an extra 4GB usb card for home. I run Arch and DWM on it.
I have tried Lubuntu and it should run better being it's more lightweight. I had to build it with the MinimalCD (https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/MinimalCD) though.
