OK, I noticed how quickly some of you identified the other movie. This one might be a little harder.

Way back when, when I had Independent Film Channel (when I had TV) I watched a Film that was simply one unvarnished musical set piece after another. There was no dancing or anything like that - just real, raw, old-school singers and unplugged musicianship. The music was Portuguese, maybe, or Spanish or Argentinian (you get the idea). The music brought tears to my eyes. I thought it might have been called Fandango, but I've never found it under that name. (The movie, I think, was named after a musical form like that.) In one scene, an old man sits at the end of a long table, like a mafia boss, and while he sings a capella, all the others slap the table with their hands in time. At the other end, a woman sang as though in answer or opposition. This music laid me low.

Anyone know this film?

I definitely haven't seen this, sounds very interesting.

Just doing a quick Google, and I know you said no dancing, but could it be Fados?

Fandango was an awesome early movie with Kevin Costner and Judd Nelson......

The music was incredibly powerful, to me. I watched the trailer for Fados. Not the movie but in that tradition. There was no overarching drama to the movie, just one incredibly powerful voice after another. Damn, but these people can sing. I've asked for the identity of this movie elsewhere but have never learned its name.

Thought I'd bump this back to the top just in case there are another 159 forum members who haven't had a crack at identifying this movie.

Wow. I've got a feeling this is going to be to obscure for you to have any luck with. Do you remember anything else about it? It sounds pretty interesting.

Can you tell which type of music was it? I also thought on Carlos Saura when I read your post (the director of Fados). Maybe Flamenco (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flamenco_%281995_film%29), or Carmen (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carmen_%281983_film%29), or Tango (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tango_%281998_film%29)? (All directed by Saura)
