Title pretty much explains it. I wanted all the other icons in the upper right, just not the envelope icon. I right-clicked it and selected remove from panel but that removed everything in the upper right.

I haven't figured out how to get the rest back. Anyone know?

This response helped me out to return everything to default:

Granted, that worked for me in 10.10. I don't know what distro number you are using though or if it would even be relevant in this circumstance.

Haven't figured out how to remove "just" the mail icon though. I agree with you there, I want to be rid of it.

To remove just the envelope use the command , logout/in or restart .
sudo apt-get remove indicator-messages
