I upgraded to Ubuntu 11.04 a few months ago and didn´t like the Unity user interface. Earlier today I installed Gnome 3, but now the PC will not boot. It seems to hang on ¨starting TiMidity ALSA Midi Emulation¨.

My CD drive is broken and the BIOS version I have does not support booting from USB.

I am pretty clueless about Ubuntu and do not know what to do next. Any suggestions, please?

can you get into the recovery?

try uninstalling timidity:

sudo apt-get remove timidity

Sorry, than I see no way of reparing your Ubuntu installation that is easier than reinstalling.
