Has anyone here experimented or regularly use GIMP's (http://jcornuz.wordpress.com/2009/05/30/could-this-be-the-ultimate-black-and-white-converter/) c2g (http://meetthegimp.org/black-and-white-conversion-with-gegl%E2%80%99s-c2g-color2gray-in-gimp/) in their workflow? I find the photos I take with my phone are a bit bland and usually use c2g with a color overlay. Here is an example taken with a Samsung Captivate:

Normal output on the left; Processed with the GIMP on the right
My Sigma DP1 broke prior to Yosemite, so I used my mom's Canon Powershot A590IS and processed the photos with the GIMP. Here is the set: http://www.flickr.com/photos/brianperedo/sets/72157625400230918/
Please post other examples and/or techniques with this fun little tool.

Please, do post your results! Be careful with the parameters, though. It's very easy to "overcook" your images. Just search 'c2g (http://www.flickr.com/search/?q=c2g)' on flickr and you'll see what I mean. There is also a thread (http://www.flickr.com/groups/gimpusers/discuss/72157619079536887/) in the GIMP group discussing the plugin with plenty of examples.

Stumbled on this thread... looks like a quick way to do HDR..., however 1) it's a CPU hog, has anyone ever processed camera-size pictures (8Mpx or more)? and 2) how do you reduce the "grain"?

It does indeed look similar to tone mapped HDR photos, except these images are much noisier.

Check out Paul's post (http://blog.wbou.de/index.php/2009/08/04/black-and-white-conversion-with-gegls-c2g-color2gray-in-gimp/) regarding what each parameter does. He specifically mentions that increasing the samples will reduce the noise.
But sometimes, I just embrace the noise and vignetting :)

Click for the original size, where you can really see the noise!
