I'm basically looking for a glorified word processor, something when I'm out & about . Saw a Sylvania(?) Netbook at KMart. Specs: XP Home Ed; 1024X900; 802.11 (don't know whose) & Ethernet; 2 USB Ports; 160G & 512 RAM; Intel Atom. Forgot to ask about the battery - probably cheap, cheap, cheap.

Thought I could throw WATTOS4, MINT LXDE, Lubuntu or PeppermintOS on it. Anybody know anything about it?

Would be nice if K-Mart didn't get bought out by Sears. Way too many Sears here, so they got rid of K-Marts.

Most netbooks made recently aren't supported for their wireless drivers unless you get the next, unstable version of Ubuntu.

That's a kernel issue isn't it? Shoudn't any Distro running Linux 3.0 suffice?

I think it will suffice, wireless adapter requiring binary blobs are in the minority now. But it doesn't hurt to check, if you can. Navigate to Device Manager, if it is on display. Realtek and Intels are the safest bets, and a little of Broadcom as far as I know.

Oops. No. I meant 600, not 900.

Hmmm, too bad.
I was hoping you were gonna say "I meant 1280x800"...:lolflag:

The lowest on their website is $249 for the Sylvania Meso

$120 is a pretty deep discount. Are you sure it's not refurbished or an opened box?

I would think that, yeah, the battery is probably garbage but that it would otherwise work well with a light distro.

It's their display netbook. I asked the salesman whether it was a discontinued model but for $119, what the hell. Right? I was just curious whether anyone had ever played around with one. I didn't even know Sylvania made computers. Didn't they used to be radios or kitchen products -- something like that?

Edit: Oh wait! No! They used to make TVs! Now I remember. I wonder if they still make them?

Might as well get the Acer for the same price

Hmmm... That's more than twice as expensive as the one in my local KMart.

Stay away from Sylvania. It breaks easily

Televisions, best bets:

(USA / Western)
-- Westinghouse
-- Insignia
-- RCA

(Japan / Eastern)
-- SAMSUNG << Watch Out Local Store Chain Buyers. Buy Only From Nationwide Chains, otherwise can be expensive.
-- SONY << Same deal as above.
-- Sansui

But since we're talking netbooks, I'm stuck on ASUS, especially for Linux. If you plan to get a wireless router, try looking at ASUS as well.

Lol. Wow! Windows CE 6.0? That's like a glorified old school PocketPC.

I noticed mwave.com has the original 7" eeepc on sale for $100-$120. I think I'd rather have that.

Actually they also have the 900a for $160, which is what I'm still using.

Yeah... but that could easily enough be fixed with Lubuntu which would go on it nicely enough.

combine that with abiword/libreoffice and you'd have a system that would meet the OP's desire of a gloried wordpressor and then some!
