Black Screen w/ pointer on login screen

I have been a long time user of Ubuntu and recently installed on a Acer Aspire 7745 without any apparent problems until the login screen. The screen is completely black with the pointer a standard white. I can log in and the ubuntu chime occurs, but the screen is still black. This occurs with the 11.04 install.

I will give you any other information needed if you can help.
