Though most of these books that are about hackers and things are not realistic and it mostly seems like everyone can hack everything through pinging.

They are not meant to be realistic, they are fiction.

Cuckoos egg however is a true story.

They are all readable mainstream, if they talked about 3 way handshakes and stack over flows and XSS and CSFR or how many IV's needed to capture to crack WEP they would not be very popular with the layman ;-)

Haha, i guess not. But i usually get annoyed when people in books and movies just starts to sit by a computer, type some words and ta-daah, they hacked into NASA! :D

or

Network Intrusion Detection an analysts handbook by Stephen Northcutt

next to your bed

They are a little more meaty ;-)

Neuromancer is a surprisingly (or unsurprisingly) bad novel.

Neuromancer is a surprisingly (or unsurprisingly) bad novel.

reasonably true...however it was an important piece and has a cult following,

Cyberpunk though not coined by Gibson was made ubiquitous due to Neuromancer and so is often seen as a the father of cyberpunk

the docu/movie is called The KGB, Computer and Me.

It is pretty cheesy ;-)

There is a pretty good novel that I read which was available online but the title eludes me right now... I got it from the Happy Hacker web site many many years ago (and currently the site is blocked where I live so I can't even look it up)...

Google "Happy Hacker" and start you search there... It was a fun read (if I get home and I remember I will try and find it... I did download it someplace)...

Sure it's important as a first in science fiction and a trendsetter. No denying that.

But it hasn't dated well at all and good science fiction always does.

The Blue Nowhere (http://www.jefferydeaver.com/Novels_/The_Blue_Nowhere/the_blue_nowhere.html), by Jeffrey Deaver
is very good.

I don't know how realistic it is, forgot most of the details, but I certainly remember it was a joy to read like most other Deaver novels.

The Cuckoo's Egg: Tracking a Spy Through the Maze of Computer Espionage is a 1989 book written by Clifford Stoll.

Seems kinda old to me. I am not sure if everything is relevant.

the OP asked for novels and books to do with hackers and computers.

and is relevant as it was in the early days of computing and networking when security was still in its infancy compared to today.

Apart from anything else, it is interesting movie and book.

You wont find many novels, books on hackers and computing that are too recent, most of the fiction pertains to the early days of the computer underground who became famous such as Legion of Doom, Masters of Deception, phiber optik, karl koch, etc etc

he wasnt asking for upto date books on Security, of which i could supply many.

It appeared he wanted fiction and light reading

Dissecting the Hack: The F0rb1dd3n Network (http://www.amazon.com/Dissecting-Hack-F0rb1dd3n-Network-Revised/dp/1597495689/ref=sr_1_15?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1313421752&sr=1-15)

I enjoyed the book -- it is a mix of fiction with the first part being a fictional story and the second part containing all the real world hack tools that are being used in the fictional story.

The two novels I've read that were beyond awesome (and had true to life hacking in them) were Daemon by Daniel Suarez and its sequel Freedom TM.

Can't recommend them highly enough. They were as good as Star Wars.
