Do the 11.04 disks available for download contain the latest, current, kernel release?

The disks are the same as when first released and as part of the install it will update to the most current minor version with fixes.

Only the LTS - long term support versions have newer/updated CDs. But even those are only up-to-date as of the day they are released.

Each release of Ubuntu uses the same kernel and only rarely are apps updated to a new version. Security fixes are backported.

Thank you for explaining the position. I had forgotten about the updates whilst installing and did not realise those updates included the latest kernel release.

Sort of yes and no... My understanding from modfying these images is that it boots from isolinux, then when you select "Install" from the menu... about 4 screens into it, it gets to a screen with an install options screen. On the screen is an option to download current updated during the install.

In the install it will download a snapshot of the system (like oldfed explained). If you selected that install option, it will download the latest updates and versions-- including the kernel, incorporating that into the initial install.
