I can't get xubuntu to update?

Hey I just installed xubuntu xfce edition on my netbook cause I got sick of windows7 starter. It's up and running now and I got it to connect to the wireless internet, but I can't upgrade it. When I tried to do it through the upgrade manager, it just says "waiting" after I put in my password and hit the check mark for "apply upgrades". Idk I waited for like 2 & half hours. I first assumed it was downloading the stuff, but it shouldn't have taken that long?

Then I logged out and logged back in and tried to do it through the terminal, but that didn't work either. Can somebody help me out?

could you paste the output after trying it in terminal
