Don't get me wrong, I love running xbmc on my htpc (atom 330 & nvidia nettop) but since I also use that box as a home server and so on, I am in need of a desktop environment that scales to my hdtv.

I've found that Gnome is the only DE that easily scales. What I mean is that, by adjusting font size and such, I can produce a workable desktop that I can actually see and use from my couch.

XFCE is almost as scalable except I could never figure out how to enlarge the window titlebar. I could never seem to get get things right with LXDE either. KDE was an utter disaster. I haven't tried openbox yet. This is troubling because, as we all know, the writing is on the wall for Gnome 2.

At any rate, I was wondering if anyone had any thoughts on this. It seems like there would be a niche market for a DE or Theme Pack designed to work well on HDTVs.

Very interesting. I was wondering this myself.

So far I've been using NoSquint (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/nosquint/) addon for Firefox to browse from the couch (bed actually).

We need something like a 10 foot user interface (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/10-foot_user_interface) Desktop Environment.

Regards.

Yeah, the no squint addon for FF is brilliant and FF lends itself to scaling too. The problem is really using the dekstop to queue up torrents, monkey with the terminal and such.

I ran across elementOS but that's even uglier than my modified gnome:

lxde and openbox (lxde uses openbox) would be fine i assume. change the font settings with lxappearance and change your openbox window borders with obconf
