Installed Natty with encrypted LVM (alt. inst. CD) and no swap?

I just finished doing a standard install of Natty 32bit off the alternate (text based) install CD. I picked "encrypted LVM", went with the defaults, with Natty as the sole OS for the whole 250gig laptop HD.

I was overwriting a Mint 11 install that had no full-disk encryption.

I've done this sort of whole-disk-encryption install before, many times with previous Ubuntus and whoops, this time it didn't create a swapfile. Which probably explains the kernel panics on any attempt to suspend or hibernate, right?

Any idea what's going on with the installer?!? And would a lack of swapfile screw me on suspend as well? The kernel panics on hibernate and suspend appear to be identical...total lockup, and the Dell (Inspiron 1525) laptop lights for capslock and one just right of that flash on and off. Even the power button is dead.

This critter has a fairly standard Intel 965/x3100 video card, Broadcom WiFi (tried swapping to Atheros, no difference) and has otherwise behaved OK in Linux.

Any ideas what's going on here, or what went wrong with the swapless install?

OH YEAH: I should also note that I'm running classic plus I've downgraded Compiz to 8.6 because 9.4 is such a huge steaming turd...
