I recently installed a Firefox extension for Google Dictionary and Translate. It allowed you to double click on a word, and it popped up a toolbox that gave you the definition.

When I tried it today, it said "Google Dictionary is no longer available". What a crock! That was an extremely useful tool.

Still works in Chrome, maybe they just dropped the FF support?

It would still work for translations, but there's no way that it could still work for the dictionary. Google completely got rid of their standalone dictionary, and that was the source. If it's still working in Chrome, then it must be something else using a different source.

Here's an article talking about it. (http://focustaiwan.tw/ShowNews/WebNews_Detail.aspx?Type=aLIV&ID=201108080011)

And Here is a link to Google Dictionary (http://www.google.com/dictionary) so you can see for yourself.

Couldn't they rewrite it to just send the string "define: <search-term>" to Google and screen-scrape the result?

Probably. I hope they do. I'm using the Dictionary ToolTip addon now. It works pretty well, but I liked the Google Dictionary one a little better.

I followed the links you provided and I see it's not there, but then the Dictionary plugin (by Google) is still working in Chrome, here:

So I guess we're probably talking about two different things.

That's weird. I'm sure the Chrome plugin was programmed differently, so maybe they're using Google in a different way. That's cool that it still works for you.
