Hi All,
I have a Dell Mini 10V running Ubuntu Linux 8.04 LTS. I need to upgrade to the latest version of Linux ..
Can you tell me please which of the latest versions I can upgrade to and exactly which download to use ( a reference to the actual download and page it is on ) to be able to upgrade.
I have looked at the many different versions and types of downloads and have no idea which to choose to be able to use the correct one.
Many thanks for any help offered.
Cheers Toubab

Hello, the latest version is Ubuntu 11.04 Natty Narwhal. I should warn you though (because this shocked alot of users that just upgraded like that..), the 11.04 version comes with a new interface, called Unity. You can still re-enable the usual interface so dont worry. Link for downloads here: http://www.ubuntu.com/download/ubuntu/download

since your 8o4 has reached EOL (https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/ubuntu-announce/2011-April/000144.html) and assuming that you want to move to the next stable release (LTS), you will have to go here (https://help.ubuntu.com/community/EOLUpgrades/Hardy) .

you may want to consider just going with a fresh install.

Thank you to you both .. I think it might be better for me to try the 10.04 upgrade .. and as I am not worried about keeping the current data on my Netbook ( I have it all on another computer ) a fresh install might be the safest option.

I know Windows systems very well, but I am a complete amateur with Linux !
Two questions:
Is the 10.04 download shown on this page: http://www.ubuntu.com/download/ubuntu/download
going to be suitable for my Netbook machine ?
On other pages when I was trying to find a suitable download, there were so many different variants for different types of computer .. hence my confusion.
and
How do I do a fresh install or where can I find simple instructions for doing it ?
Please
Cheers Toubab

A fresh install is really self explanatory. It will more or less guide you through the entire thing. Just remember to tell it to use all space, and use UTC for your time.

The standard 10.04 download will work fine with your netbook. Just go to the Download page at ubuntu.com

Many thanks for the info and the UTC hint, greatly appreciated.
Do I assume correctly that downloading 10.04, transferring it to a memory stick and connecting it to my netbook .. I will be given the choice of a fresh install ?

10.04 "Lucid Lynx" is the current Long Term Support (LTS) release. It was released April 2010 and will be supported through April 2013. It is a good choice if you like slightly older software that is stable and well-tested.

The only problem you'll run into with Ubuntu on your Mini 10v is the wireless. Here's an easy how-to for fixing that problem:

Just a note to thank you all again for your kindly given and helpful advice ..

I am pleased to say that .. following the instructions on the Ubuntu download page .. I was able to try it out first and and then carry out a fresh install from a USB memory stick. All completed and updated in around 20 minutes from start to finish, without any problems at all !! :p
