i dug around and found a deb file to install, but started compiling sources to get the old backends up... i decided to give up on that when i found this package called beep media player.
http://sourceforge.net/projects/beepmp/files/bmpx/0.20/bmpx-0.20pre2.tar.gz/download
is where i got mine
grab these packages first via synaptic
libgamin-dev
libmusicbrainz4-dev
libtag1-dev
libneon27-dev
libstartup-notification0-dev
libsqlite3-dev
libasound2-dev
libxine-dev
libglewmx1.5-dev
&&
explosion on make.
http://www.ubuntugeek.com/how-to-install-xmms-on-ubuntu-10-04-lucid.html works on ubuntu 10.10 amd64 ;-) i think this links instructions might break your systems glib and require you to reinstall your glib.
