Same problem with 6870 for me. I have been trying things from various forums for months. Eventually I had to give up and go back to 10.10, which works great.

Anyone heard of any new solutions to this one. Is it an ATI driver problem, or an Ubuntu problem? I don't know. Windows 7 has none of these problems.

I have an i7 with 16GB memory on a TH67 board.

Are you using Catalyst v11.9? If so, then roll back to v11.8.

Version 11.9 has problems with Compiz and Unity with some hardware combos- Therefore the v11.9 issues with 11.04 & 11.10, but not with 10.04.
