What are your thoughts on Windows Media Player 11 ? I have been using it for about 3 weeks now on my XPsp2 box, it is supposed to be the vista version.

Notice similarities to Linux programs?

Gmusicbrowser? Cowbell? others?

Just wondering what your thoughts are?

*hangs head in shame for still using windows, even though I prefer Ubuntu(I really need to spend some time setting up my Ubuntu into a multimedia powerhouse; any suggesstions on how to do this?)*

It's just an eye candy boost from WMP10, that's all. Well, add in the MTV feature, then yeah.

As for a multimedia powerhouse, try amaroK as a media player.

This brings me to a bigger question which is the best way to transfer all my music from Windows to Ubuntu?

I would really like to break free from windows and my music and photos are the only things holding me back now, and some games of course(and the fact that I have yet to get Ubuntu to load on my new computer, works like a dream on my old computer!)

gxine (xine-ui) plays everything, so you're good to go.

There are ways to convert from wmv/wma, if you prefer to use other media players.

Edit: Keep your media on a separate hard drive.

Well typically, music and photos are pretty large. You could try compressing them and backing them up onto a DVD (if you have that much)--make sure it's a readable format in ubuntu. Or you could try installing a new ubuntu partition on your new computer, and mount the windows partition. For you games you could try wine or Cedega (costs money). ;)

I bought a big pack of DVD's I have been thinking of burning my collection to these, I think I have over 5000 songs though.

I have also been contemplating loading my music online to a storage/player site OboeLocker, only $30something a year? then I wouldn't be tied to any computer and could play my music from any computer any OS.

perhaps doing both is the best option? I just don't know?

photos I have thousands of then also.

or I could keep Windows as a music player and photo box?

There is just something ethically wrong in continuing to use Windows or even Apple. It feels wrong to my soul.
